    Pcv system cleaning

    Hey guys

Have searched around a bit but can't really tell. Is there any guides for cleaning the pcv system? As in how much to take out to clean?

I can see the bit that comes out of the back of the head and runs along the back of it and to the valve. Do I remove all of that and then the bit that points down or is it just up to the valve?

Pics with arrows would also help hehe

    Cheers
    Chris

Cheers boss. How can I have spent most of yesterday afternoon looking for this and not found this diagram???

So basically anything that has a coloured arrow next to it needs cleaning in the PCV system??? Can I replace the little clips with jubilee clips?

Had a bit of a bad few weeks and this was last thing I needed from the car so Once again massive thank you

        Hi guys

Sorry to bring this up again but need some advice.

Started stripping down the breather from the car to clean it out, do I need to take off the item numbered 1A on the diagram above? And the items that are marked with the green arrows?

If im going to do it, I want to make sure im doing the right items and not missing bits off.

        Cheers
        Chris

I wouldn't take every last piece apart, but yes get the lot off and clean it all out. Unless the pieces of flexi look deteriorated in which case replacement may not be a bad idea.

I'd take sections out leaving it joined as much as you can and cleaning it out, and really the bit you want to take care of is the 1-way valve behind the IM and the section from the sump including the PCV valve and pipe with the firetrap (6A).

Get that firetrap out - use a hooked wire if you can find it - and clean it up or replace it.

Cheers Ross. The pipes look ok and so far im trying to take it out in as much of 1 piece as I can see possible. When you say the 1 way valve, which number item do you mean? Number 3 - the pressure regulating valve or number 20 - the bleeder valve?

Also am I right in thinking if I sit the stuff in a bucket of petrol over night and try to clean it all out as much as poss that is the correct thing to do? (im no mechanic but trying to do the best I can without my mechanic mates around this time as one of them has just brought a mk2 Cortina!)

Once you've removed it all to clean, leave it off and fit something that works better

Well now you mention it... In fairness, just a swirl pot is a worthwhile upgrade.

Hahaha, shameless plug there hahahaha. If I had the money to do it I would but at the moment im trying to keep the costs down as I have already spent more spare than I can afford this month on the car and I need it to just work properly.... hence trying to do this rather than upgrade etc. it will happen but not just yet.

So just taken it all off and the valves and firetrap are thickly coated in oil and cream. The rest of the pipes are full of oily residue too!

Quick question, can I clean the section of rubber pipe number 11 with brake cleaner with it still on the car? Is it ok to get a bit of brake cleaner into the engine is what I'm asking????

                          Cheers

NO! Do not do that under any circumstances!

Oily residue will come back after a short while, make sure that the PCV valve, flame trap and 1 way valve are all in good working order.

Ok will do my best to clean it out without brake cleaner then. I'm actually going to be fitting new valves and will do the flame trap when it arrives in a week or so time. For the time being will be cleaning the old one up. Will clean the pipes up best I can too and won't put brake cleaner in. Cheers for that
