    ZeroLag Technology

    Thought you might like this...

One of our performance engineers at work has developed a zerolag system for his impreza...essentially making the turbo run like a gas turbine without burning any additional fuel! I won't divulge his secrets though...its epic though!

nice. I take it he installed a nozzle in the turbo entry and spraying gas or LPG or something. Would be interesting to see the EGTs....

Another thought would be to use an air accumulator (as in hydraulic/pneumatic) and collect air under pressure during boost and then release it during shifts or with a switch in the turbo neck also. That why he revs up at the beginning (because that what he uses does not have the power to spin up the turbo but has power to sustain it).

We are waiting for the details....

Very interesting, i'm just as impressed with his ability to monitor the turbine speed, how does that work?

That system is close to what he has....can you guess who he used to work for?

His system doesn't require any more fuel and uses the unburnt hydrocarbons from the exhaust, essentially a combuster can just before the turbo hot side.

Engine EGTs will probably be quite normal but I imagine turbo life will be diminished!

I'll try and get some more info. Unfortunately I don't think there's space in our cars for such a system!

It'll be an infra red sensor on the cold side turbine to measure speed, I'll double check

                Here:

The item you refer to is known as a "rocket". This device is fitted to the header just in front of the turbo and works as a sophisticated anti-lag system.
Air and fuel are fed into a combustion chamber and ignited by a spark on over-run, it can be used in three stages (depending on how long you want the engine to last) and is the cause of the load banging noise that can be heard as these cars pass by and the flames coming out of the tail pipe. This system is used in conjunction with the boost pack which stores excess pressure in it's own reservoir to be fed back into the engine inlet side of the inter cooler when the throttle is depressed after shut off.
All this is coupled to the "flat change" gear shift and launch control system which is of course controlled the the ECU.
Just to give you some idea of prices:
                WRC Header £2,200
                WRC Turbo £10,000
                Boost Pack £3,000
                ECU £5,000
                Engine Wiring Harness £3,000
The "rocket" system was removed from customer cars by Prodrive, and only cars still under contract (S11 onwards) left the factor with this spec.
                Hope this was of help

few pics circled is the rocket system/charge canister

shame itll cost thousands in gearboxes, clutches and cranks over the next few runs.

gotta be one cheesebox per run.

lookls like that manifold will require a remote oil filter housing too.

Bigger plenum = more air mass on throttle actuation from closed position.
Don't start about lag due to the big volume to fill, there is no lag on a Subaru WRC S09 and later, they make 2,5bars of boost from standstill, revving under 2k rpm. Too bad the reliability let them down, far too complex technology for the non Works teams, every engineers dream to develop. (at least for me, dream job, but bye bye social live )

Umluft, 1985 air injection into the exhaust manifold, pity about the EGTs eating everything.

How come the subaru one does not burn out its exhaust valves? Better control?

the subaru will probably be running rich on overrun so it'll cool it down but i imagine spark could also be quite retard...and yes, probably a pretty complex control system!
