as above, AND if a new genuine part, i.e bumper trim or rubber moulding is not available car is written off

cat D would not bother many people of a car this age

you are missing my point, most people think cat D equals light panel damage/attempted theft etc etc which is mostly correct but some newish cars get a D marker for fairly heavy damage. For instance last week I was working on a 57 plate a3,the owner had bought it at approx 1 year old and knew it had had 'light front end damage',while it was on the lift I could see where it had been repaired and it was not a light repair at all, most of the n/side chassis leg looked to have been bodged and I could tell from marks on the bulkhead that the engine had been pushed back about 6 inches in the accident.

I am not trying to suggest tangos car has had heavy damage but people need to be aware that a cat D car can be a lot worse than they think.I for one wouldn't have been happy spending the 10k on the a3 that this bloke did knowing what I could see under the car,if the car was say 8years old at the time of the accident I know for a fact it would have been classed as a C if not a B.

What I am getting at is the whole Cat C/D system can be misleading

I see what you mean! So CatC/D rating is fairly irrelevant unless you know at what age/car value the Cat rating was applied.
As a Cat D on a new car could be massive/structural damage, but Cat D on a 15 year old car could be little more than a scratch.

aslong as i know the reason the car was classified in the first place i'm happy. i bought a cat c clio from copart in kent or somewhere down that way. took trade plates and a booster pack and drove it back to newcastle (illegal? only if caught lol) got home and hammered the wheel well back out, heat gunned the bumper and that was it, didn't even need paint. vic checked and set to go so aslong as potential buyer knows why it was cat d'd im sure it'll still sell no problem..
