Went to Hullavington yesterday with my old man to do a day with Motorsport Events. I've done a few days with them and they're good value for money as well as being well run and having a relaxed atmosphere. Well worth a go.
Anyway, this was the first time I've tracked the car with the RS2 setup and so I was a little unsure what to expect but luckily, I needn't have worried! Overall, the car performed very well and was not only fast in a straight line (115+ at 3 points on the quite short track) but didn't disappoint in the twisties either. I was approached by quite a few people over the course of the day who were a little confused how their lightweight special hadn't made significant or indeed any ground on the old girl through the twisties and had then been left for dead on the straight
I still had a pair of the Pirelli track tyres, so they went on the front and that worked out really well, giving control and traction with a slightly forwards balance of grip which was beneficial in all but really hard braking, where the car could feel a little unstable but that's not much new with stock rear brakes on a less than smooth surface from 120-30mph.
The new toys on the car did very well, had very little lag and could take 2-3 flat out laps in the 25 degree heat before I needed to back off so I could blink
It was as fast as an Elise on track tyres and even held its own against an Aerial Atom! I had one chap come over and apologise for trying not to let me by - "I thought to myself, I'm not letting a Volvo through" - but WOT in 4th with the exhaust valve open meant that he didn't have much of a choice in the matter and got a face full of noise for his troubles
There were a few others who couldn't quite comprehend that a large car was faster than them but that's nothing new tbh
For the first time ever, I did a half spin while trying to race a Fireblade powered Fisher Fury on silly wide A048s through some 3rd gear tight twisties
Having spoken to the guy earlier about him following me round the track, he just couldn't believe that such a big car could keep him honest on the straights, in acceleration and then pull away when we went above 80mph or so. He and I were loving the neutral slides that the weight shift at high load was producing, along with a little provocation in the form of a mini Scandinavion flick too
On the corner I spun at we both agreed that the entry speed was 'ambitious'. It should be on camera, so see if it' scome out well.
The new swirl pot and catch tank system also worked a treat with not a drop of oil making it to the catch tank, so I'm really happy with that. What I wasn't so hapy with was the oil consumption and I think that the head is reaching a point where a rebuild is on the cards but I'll do some more investigation.
The old man had a go for the first time ever (quite a baptism of fire!) and had a 20 minute lesson, where an over eager instructor took him well beyod his comfort levels but the car coped admirably.
So, overall it was great to get out in the old girl again and it was even more satisfying to surprise so many people
