A friend in the US sent me a link for a 92 S4 for sale. Bit i am curious about is the storage compartment on the left hand side, was this standard fitment to US spec cars as i've never seen one before?

That is a very very nice 92 UrS4. Its sale has been talked about on my home forum for a couple of weeks. We are not sure why it has not sold yet. Price is fair, given the condition.
As for the cubby cover aka "cover for battery telephone", PN 4A5863715 (taken off a spare that I have in my hand), it is Item 11 in the diagram below. All of the UrS4s and UrS6s in North America came with a Motorola corded but handsfree telephone in the front armrest ("Turn on Telephone". "Name please". "Mark". "Mark" (and then it dialed the number stored under "Mark" - it also picked up an incoming call after one ring and muted the radio. When you were done "Turn of Telephone" "Goodbye".) The 92 and 93s and maybe the 94s had the 5W transmitter on the left side of the trunk, the cover you seen covered the tranmitter but also created a nice storage area for fluids, polish, paper towels, CD cases, etc). My 93 has it. The spare (not for sale) came from a 93.
There is also a hinge 4A5863623 but my friend Kate says she doesn't know anything about it (must come with the cover)
