I have found an A4 B5 that i want, but i really really hate them (and all other avants) without rails... Is it possible to retrofit these or do "railed" cars have a different roof?

You didn't say which year but there might still be replacement rails and mounting hardware available. The part numbers are in main group 0, subgroup 35, Illustration 035-00, accessories.
I know the rails attach to studs via set screws and that the studs come up from the inside of the car, i.e. you would have to drop the headliner to install the studs. Not a big deal in an avant because you can pull the headliner out the back of the car easily (once you've removed all the trim etc that holds it in).RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan

it´s a 97 avant. I have also found a URs6 avant with the same issue, I am sure i could go to the local scrapyard and get the rails and mouting parts there, but is it just a case of drilling holes and installing the stuff or is it more complicated?

Buy the urS6 Avant rather than the B5 Avant.

Yeah, i know i should mate, a friend of mine owned it a while back and it is in VGC! I know they are better cars, but they just feel so dated... I know the B5 isn´t state of the art either but i have had 4 of those too, and they are ****** good cars too. Slow, but good.Comment
