UK road safety rules changing gearbox

    Hi everyone.

A question for the British friends.

What happens in UK on a MOT/road rules if you made a mod like i.e. changing the gearbox of a vehicle from a 5 gears to a 6 gears one?

    Any legal problem/issue arises?

I'm asking because in Italy the Numbers of gears it's on the car documents and such a mod it's forbidden by law.

    Thanks for your answer.

Convert to 6 spd and put a 5 spd knob on for the MOT inspection?

No problem with this in the UK. The MOT test doesn't specify gearing as far as I'm aware.

In Ireland the vehicle registration certificate dosent list anything about transmission, not even if its manual or automatic.

The powers that be are concerned about any modification that may impact the emissions output of a vehicle. Is a test drive part of the inspection process in EU countries? Here in the USA there are only a few states that have a mandated inspection for vehicles. To tell the truth, some of the vehicles I work on should not be on the road. But no law to prevent junkers on the highway.

Only that it should be insured as a modification.

As above... won't affect MOT unless it somehow affects emissions -- which it won't.

Should be insured as a modification.
