      thanks for the answer..

The 7A cover or the coil rubbers will need some modification even with the tall coil packs. BTDT. Just not as extensive as with the shorty's.

Nevermind (read page 2 Dave BEFORE posting)

I thought with the taller 115E coil packs the 7A cam cover didn't need to be machined. Is that correct?

Nope. Still needs to be machined (if you keep the rubber seals)...You just don't have to clearance for the plug like on the shorty's. So you either remove the rubber seals and little notches; or machine the cover, which is the proper way, IMO. Retention feature...check...Debris seal...check.

When I did the original 1.8T coilpack conversion back in 2005, I discovered that the coil packs grip onto the sparkplugs like a pit bull on a poodle. So the "retention" feature is not needed (IMO).

I like the external coils at the bulkhead and think it looks best with the 7A cam cover, what to do...?

Sorry. I read "Gaffer" as "geezer". (The only "gaffer" we use over here has something to do with making movies).

I don't "carter" is translating correctly but *IF* you are talking about positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube that runs through the AAN, ABY and ADU cam covers, entering at the back end of the cover and exiting near the front, with the 7A cam cover, you can run an external tube (e.g. painted copper plumbing pipe) as shown here:
