Hey guys

whats the difference between the ABY and the 3b intake manifold?

I have just started putitng the head and items back on my car and have them powder coated. I didnt think at the time to get the intake done so my old grubby one is letting the bay down after having spent some time cleaning a few other areas in sight.

My question is would a nice shiny 3b version (my brother has it and isnt going to use it) fit on my ABY? Would there be any advantages or disadvantages or is it a definate DO NOT DO!???

Have you got both to hand?? If so match them up.. Couldn't see a difference between the two. But could be wrong

I havent unfortunately. I dont know where my brothers one is and i have just put my ABY one back on. I was going to see if it was worth taking back off to put the 3b one on instead but want to find the differences first in case its not worth trying to do.

I have read the casting is supposed to be the same but I cant remember as I havent seen the 3b one for so long....

The ABY is larger volume, by about 1L IIRC, than the 3B. It is also identical to the ADU, just without the inscription. Larger volume and improved shape should help with cylinder flow equalization, but the actual flow data is inconclusive from what I've seen. I believe the static flow bench shows the 3B as better, but I wouldn't go solely on that fact as the dynamics are important and I don't believe the temporal progression would be toward lower performance.

Second and more imporant in your case, the throttle body neck sticks out further and higher on the ABY to clear the back of the ABY/ADU cam cover, so the 3B will interfere with the ABY cam cover. So you would also need to swap to a 3B cover, or modify the ABY one, which I've seen done, but not worth the trouble as welding is required and looks the pants.

Moral of the story...stick with the ABY. If you don't want to wait for powder coating, just clean it up and spray paint it. It can look very tidy with a bit of prep time.

aby throttle body sits a bit higher than 3b to clear the taller rocker cover thats about it. they flow no different or at least nothing worth talking about

On a flow bench, statically, 1 port at a time, yes...but a moot point as it won't fit in this chassis without modifying and possibly changing it's flow characteristics. The mid-entry throttle body likely has some advantage which may go away.

Ok so from what I can decipher, the 3b item wont work properly cos of the throttle body position compared to the ABY.... Means I need to clean mine up or get another ABY one and get it powdercoated when I have the time and funds.
