    American/english cars

Out of interest what cars can you get in both countries that are interesting?

I know you can get the following in both:

    coupe quattros - type 89/85
sierra 3 door/xr4i - merkuer (I think its this model) 3 door sierra
    most porsches in both countries.

Is there any other interesting motors?

I don't think you can get ford escorts (just a different model with the same name) and sapphire's.

      golf - rabbit etc

passat's are over there as well.

Are they unfortunate to have to suffer vauxhalls in the states?

          interesting to know.

I was quite surprised at the prices of some stuff. A porsche 944 was BIN on ebay.com the other day 2.5litre model = £700

Take it the only Q you get like that is the ur quattro?

where is the best place to get cars from? american ebay seemed quite good when I looked but the distance you'd have to go for some cars seems mental. I've done long journeys to pick up cars including going on ferries but never planes.

No. North America got 1983-86 Audi 4000 (Audi 90 for you) with quattro (and center and rear diff locks - no Torsen yet). Then we got C3 Audi 5000 (100/200) quattros (turbo and non-turbo 10V) and B3 Audi 90 quattros (non-turbo), Coupe quattros (7A) and B4 V6 quattros.

You are using "get" rather than "got" as in past tense.

Out of interest, when importing a car that the country has not had before is it possible to register it?

I know saltinots got the rs2 that I don't think the states has but what about say a escort or sapphire? I've seen the attempt at a ford escort that the states got and i'm not at all keen on it.

Depends. In Canada, we can import cars that were never imported previously by the manufacturer into Canada provided that the car is 15 years old to the month, e.g. a car built in Dec. 1997 can now be imported into Canada. This would include the S6 Plus. The first RS2s were eligible for importation in Canada as early as March 2009 (based on finding one that was built in March 1994). That is why we now have 5 or 6 RS2s in Canada (the "15 yr rule"). There is also a list of younger cars that can be imported from the US of A that Transport Canada has.

In the US, the general rule is 25 years (not 15 like Canada). However, if you have deep pockets, it is possible to get younger cars into the US provided they are "federalized", i.e. modified to meet US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and/or Dept. of Transportation requirements. This includes bumpers, side impact beams in doors, headlights, engine mods (for EPA certification).

Tom S's is technically still an Audi 80 avant (WAU VIN, not WAC). That said, I don't know how is going to register the car, if/when the time comes. The Audi 80 avant was never imported into the US either. However, based on the 25 year rule, 1994 + 25 = 2019.

Thats a very informative post as usual with you

Do cars that have been imported have to have mods to suit america's roads. i.e. some ur quattro's i've seen in america have the stupid bumpers for crash protection etc rather than the bumpers most are used to. Or can a car be imported as it is and just run on stock euro bumpers?

The North America bumper standards are much more stringent than Europe or the UK, and have been for sometime. Typically there is a dollar limit on damage that can be sustained in a certain speed "accident", e.g. must be less than $1000 damage after a 5 mph bump. As far back as when MGBs were still being built, this resulting the MGBs going to Canada and the US having massively ugly rubber bumpers, instead of the thin chrome jobbies.

In the case of the UrQ, the US and Canadian delivery UrQs all got larger, more compliant bumpers than those for delivery in the rest of the world.

In the case of the UrS4 and UrS6 cars, North American delivery models got larger bumpers with aluminum "C"-section reinforcing mounted on hydraulic shock-type mounts (to allow some compliance during a real low speed bump).

Here is some info I compiled previously about the differences in Euro and NAmerican C4 UrS bumpers:

                            The Audi Enthusiast website. Forums for all Audis including A4, S4, A5, S5, A6, S6, allroad, A8, S8, TT, R8, Q5, Q7, 4000, 100, 200, v6, v8, vintage, local forums

None of the above applies in Canada if the car is older than 15 years. For example, a 1994 UrS4 avant from Germany with "Euro" bumpers could be imported into Canada and registered with no modifications (it would still have to pass a basic safety inspection, e.g. looking for brake problems). Later it would have to meet the local air quality monitoring requirements, e.g. "Air Care" testing every 2 years (which my RS2'd 93 UrS4 passes without issue).

It seems you are really fishing for specific info. PM me if you want to discuss something off line.

We also got the the MGBs and Midgets that had the horrible plastic bumpers and extra ride height, but only on cars from the mid '70s onwards. My GF's '65 Midget is the real deal.

Forgive Pete and his curious accent. If you was living where he was, you might be one of them people what speaks like that too.
I often wonder if I am reading Dave's posts in the correct accent. Especially when it comes to words like 'out' and 'about'. Just a couple of my favourite Canadian words.
