    Was the S2 forgotten?

Up until only a few years ago, when I was 16, I had never actually heard of an S2. I'd only known of it's younger brother the TT.

I only found the S2 because I used to look up rallying videos of the S1 and one day had entered S2 rally car thinking they might have made such a thing because I'd never heard of a roadgoing S1/S2.

Was it an unpopular car back in the day?

Quite a shame, seems when they released the a4 and the new range, they just closed a book on all of the old Audis. Over here, barely anybody has a clue what an S2 is.

Don't know what I'd do without this forum to be honest!

The S2 lived forever in the shadow of its older brother, the Ur. Initial press enthusiasm was soon tempered by the early car's steering and the protracted demise of the Ur. In short, it's always been the bridesmaid. The fact it was a different type of animal to the Ur seemed totally lost on the press, and the comparison with the Ur has taken years to deminish.

Cream always rises to the top. It's like it was almost destined to be the quiet understated child at the back of the class. Well groomed but rarely engaging with others, achieved moderate success until later in their life when they suddenly surprise a few people.

It's a shame it had been compared to the UR unfairly as there was a fair bit of difference between the two. I can't believe how understated an S2 is and the fact they are so cheap does not do them justice.

Good thing that most of them are in the safe hands of an enthusiast which will keep most S2s in great condition for years to come, long live the underdog

M3 and 968 always outshone the S2 in the driving stakes and all weather practicality is rarely a consideration when the motoring press are involved...

I read a magazine at the time, comparing the old ur vs the new S2 - in summing up the writer said "The old Audi is like a world champion boxer. fit, mean, lean & packs a powerful punch - the new S2 is that same boxer but a few years older & now overweight trying to make a comeback" How rude

That's just the point, the Ur at the time was being killed off at the prime of its mythical status/life, whilst the S2 was for a different market, mindset and owner... So the press just naturally put the S2 as the Ur replacement. Whilst reality says, the S2 is a far superior continental GT car, against the quattro as a fast country road sports car.

For me the UR is like an Audi R8 and the S2 is a bentley continental GT..sort of

Asking for Ur quattro bits in a main dealer is a marriage with the intellectually flawed as well, the discussion ebbing and flowing between A4 and TT with the odd ramblings into A5... Then, finally, when the pants are pulled firmly over ones head, they find the part and either a) quote a price hitherto unknown in modern commerce, or b) look blankly at 'back order' NLA until the pea sized brain settles into the slot and the words. 'sorry mate' 'its not available any more' come out... It's like an Ealing Comedy...

PS At this point I normally have Pete Reeve on the other end of the phone who can supply said part next day delivery....

As martin from vagparts used to tell me - its easier for them to say what is still available - which ain't a lot.
