How would a new member,register?

Someone I know is trying to register,but he's having difficulties.
Could anybody tell me step by step guide on,registering and I will pass them on.
I can't remember what I did,it was along time ago and I'm getting old.

Press the 'register now' button. It's at the bottom of the 'log in' box on the LHS of the home page.

Ive simplified the question now, I had updated it before to make it more difficult during the period when we were getting alot of spam.
