You've got Error404 on one shoulder saying "buy some 18x8.5s, they'll look sweet" and I'm on the other shoulder saying "buy some 17x7.5s, they'll be really light" . It's like good and evil but both good!

3 kg weight saving at each wheel and an inch down, may be felt.

Is there a formula for converting the rotating weight versus deadweight?

There are quite a few theories (they all try and approximate the 'I' value of the wheel and tyre) but they all say that less weight is a good thing by a factor of 2x, 3x or more. You save weight twice, firstly in linearly accelerating the dead weight and secondly in rotationally accelerating the wheel and tyre assembly. I can tell the difference in acceleration between my old 17s at 23kg and my OE Avus 16s at 19kg

All this is forgotten when fitting brakes that require larger wheels!

I am told that a weight saving of 4 kg at each wheel, will be the same thing as to take a person out of the car

It's all to do with the rotational acceleration component. In first, this is much stronger than in 5th or 6th, very much like a lightened flywheel.

Best way to do it is to get some data! Either off VAG Com using engine RPM or off another type of logger. I use an old Nokia phone and race chrono with a 5hz GPS receiver. I must look and see if there's anything on android that I can use...

I've been running 245/40s on 17x8.5s, seems like the perfect size!
