Guys i have a slight problem bought a 58 plate A4 2L tdi stunning car but one niggle is its fuel economy its averaging about 40mpg which i think is crap?? My previous A4 was a quattro and did the same anyone have any ideas why its a little thirsty?? and before anyone says its not due to a heavy right foot thats only in my S2 thanks in advance
Thats not good!! I gave my ex my previous A4 which was a 1.9tdi quattro sport 130bhp stunning car very few problems i was under the impression id get 55mpg easily from this????
55MPG? I don't get that from my VW Lupo 3L.
From experience I can tell you that 1.9 TDI engines are more economical than 2.0 TDI and more reliable.
I've heard that 2.0TDI engines from 2009 onward are OK but the ones until 2009 are a piece of crap.
I know some VAG engines (PD) suffer from cam failure- MPG can drop to mid 30 early 40s when this happens? its also noticeable through backpressure on air box- like there is a clip loose off the airbox, sounds like flapping and the car can feel a little hesitant when put through its paces.
Get the DPF removed or gutted and get the car remapped to suit. DPF's are a piece of **** IMHO. Theyre a false ecomomy, there just designed to reduce emmisions, but the side effect is reduced efficiency of the engine. Then they get all coked up and the economy and performance really suffers. Get it out....

Wife haa a new 140bhp 2.0tdi 4 motion Tiguan and she is only getting mid 30's we have had it back twice now to the stealer and been told there is nothing wrong
We had better mpg out of her 210bhp 2.0tsi Scirocco which we sold to get her the Tiguan when the twins came along
Yeah am gona take it to the dealer and get them to look at it again sold my Range Rover sport to get economy to only get another 10mpg not bloody worth it!!
If it is a 2WD, surely that is too low. I get better than 40mpg out of my 1994 Citroen ZX Turbo Diesel. Would have thought modern diesels would be better. I know the PD engines are very good driven sensibly but dont have actual experience of the engine you talk about. I would be taking it somewhere to be looked at though. 40mpg from a new diesel defeats the object of buying it, as you said.
Just did a quick bit of research and maybe I was wrong. THe latest A4 TDI can get a "freakish" 66mpg but the older variants (found one from 2007) that returned only 38mpg. Seems very low but maybe that is how it is.
Well hoping to get my A4 in this week hopefully but the S2 has developed a fresh problem it starts ok when its cold but when the engine is warm or hot it takes anything from 4 to 10 times to actually start - anybody with any clues on what it might be??
If I remember rightly its the cam position sensor, there's a trick to getting it started and nobody knows why it works but if you pour water behind the cam wheel where the sensor is it should fire up. I had it on mine and the trick works.
You're not trying hard enough. I've managed 36mpg, although not from 'normal' driving.
The worst I can normally get is about 70mpg (7,8L) on a trip, that's loaded up with 2 mountain bikes on the roof, and the AC on.
