    No radio reception

The radio reception in my '94 Coupe is really poor, no MW & very poor FM. I've had the stereo out and the aerial connector to the back is connected & seems to be ok.
Are aerials prone to failure on these Coupes & if so how difficult are they to replace? I'm assuming the wire from the aerial to the stereo would be a pig to replace as I guess this is a headlining out job.......

If the aerial has failed, it will usually be at the base of the bee sting however, don't rule out the fact that the radio tuner itself could be knackered

If you get an aftermarket radio you need to install an adapter to supply 12v through antrnna wire to aerial amplifier that is in the base of aerial .
Or are models that have an wire that gets out from the base of antenna and needs to be powered 12v if you want some good reception

I'm getting a new stereo in the next few weeks as the current one has a tape player and I want to make sure I've got everything sorted before I start stripping things apart to fit the new one. All the speakers are being replaced as well so I don't want to keep pulling the stereo for various.
I do have an old stereo that I could rig up to the car as I know the radio works on that, I think this might be the best solution.
As an aside, can you still get the whole aerial unit new or is it going to be a second hand/aftermarket jobbie??
I didn't know about the amplifier for the stereo any ideas where I can get one of these too?
          Sorry for all the questions............

by a quality roof mounted aerial and bolt it in in place of old one. wire up and you get a decent radio reception. i put a little bit of wynns instant gasket round the base to ensure no leak. mine cost 15 quid and works well.
i think the original had a built in powered amp modern ones don't need it.

The original and a quality replacement have connectors for both the power feed and the aerial feed at the aerial base unit so you only have to remove the rear light to replace it. A new radio may work well with a non amplified base unit aerial but to g'tee the best reception, buy one with an amplifier in the base, i.e. the aerial base unit has both +12v and aerial feeds.

There will be a blue wire at the rear of your stereo, normally use to provide a signal to electric aerials to or power up an external amp. This can be used to send juice to the amplifier in the aerial itself if needed.

Ok, the new stereo is going in today and there is a wire for the aerial power, but which colour wire comes from the aerial to the back of the head unit? Is it the brown/grey wire with the brown connector on?

Does the avant (1995) have a powered aerial like the coupe?

I have rubbish reception and didn't know about the feed to the aerial.

                      Cheers

                          Thanks Greg_S

That explains the rubbish reception, will get it fixed this week.

                          Cheers
