It hard to believe that the guys watching him didn't know what was going on?

Sounds like the inner race of the outer CV has stripped the shaft splines to me.

I may well have a rear driveshaft Brian, but it will be mixed up with about 6 others so you'd need to let me know the shaft length and the number of splines so I can see if I've got the one you need
Just had a quick look under car....and from example photo the shaft length from ribs on shaft where each cv boot starts is approximately 255mm. The distance on the driverside o/s is 280mm. Dont know the number of splines, but i guess its less than found on the fronts as i think its a smaller diameter shaft

Took the driveshaft off today to be sent off to be used as a pattern for manufacturing a new one, and was very surprised with what i found. I think it appears my Aby has a 7a size driveshaft.......my early Abys a Hybrid

The shaft has a diameter of around 24mm at the worn splined end, i was expecting it to be nearer 31mm. Without the damage i suspect the diameter to be around 27mm

If its compatible with a 7a driveshaft assemby then i guess thats good news cos i guess theres more of them around for sale?

The replacedment outer CV joint is also too large for the hub on my car, will post more photos later.

Anybody able to confirm the part number for the 7a driveshaft?

                  Cheers, Brian

Hmmm..it is possible you have a complete 7A diff and driveshafts fitted as the CQ20v and S2 hub fitment is the same but from memory the S2 shaft itself is actually a smaller diameter than the CQ20v one. . Easy way to check what diff and shafts are fitted is measure the inner CV flange hole pattern - S2 is 108mm PCD, the CQ20v is 100mm.
CQ20v inner CV joints don't fit on S2 shafts and viceversa. AFAIK the outer CV is the same.

The diameter of the inner flange is 108mm, the diameter to the 6 mount holes is approx 92mm. Overall length from inner flange to outer cv spline is 555mm, and the outer cv spline is approx 26.8mm diameter.
