You can change the style the forum displays by selecting your preferred style at the bottom left of the site.
We have made an enhancement so that old threads should now link from search results to the correct thread. This is not yet in place for single post links

Can anyone recommend a good spell checker program, ie one that will edit/highlight this text for example ? All the ones I have tried so far are copy and paste rubbish

I have something analogue called a "dictionary". Digital, I check spelling of individual words with Google (kind of like tuning a piano with a sledge hammer).
As for highlighting, this forum is good in that if you left click and cursor over some text, to highlight it and then hit CTRL B you get "bold". CTRL U = underlined or CTRL I = italics. You can even combine all three like I just did here.

For basic English errors, this site is quite good at showing obvious flaws. Alas, as above, it gets many things wrong also.
As long as the message is clear, I don't particularly care. Content is more important. I just get annoyed at a machine suggesting I have something wrong when I clearly do not.
I quite liked the spell checker on Mozilla firefox, similar to the one on Microsoft word, underlined misspelt words in red and you could right click for suggestions.
Whatever the latest internet explorer is on my girlfriends computer does the same thing, but also sometimes auto corrects, which can be annoying at times,
