    Avant MOT Failure - Emissions

    Morning all,

My S2 Avant failed the MOT yesterday.. handbrake (go figure!) but also emissions

The tester said he couldn't find the engine code so used a 'default' - looking closer at the fail sheet he has put it down as a Audi NG 2.3 injection..

    Results were:
    First Fast Idle Test

    CO FAIL - 0.6 (Limit <0.3)
    HC PASS - 102 (Limit <200)
    LAMBDA PASS - 1.02 (Limit <0.3)

    Second Fast Idle Test

    CO FAIL - 0.67 (Limit <0.3)
    HC FAIL - 244 (Limit <200)
    LAMBDA PASS - 1.02 (Limit <1.03)

    Natural Idle Test

    CO FAIL - 0.64 (Limit <0.5)

Car has done 130k, serviced regularly (just had a full service including plugs), engine runs very nicely, no smoke etc, does smell a bit rich though..

Any ideas on where to start? Sensor or cat problem?

Be interested to know how do these results compare to others?

    Thanks

Take it somewhere else!? A small garage specialising in old VAG stuff maybe - I'm sure they will be more amenable.

My local MOT place puts the S2 down as 'un-specified' petrol non cat as the engine code is not on their system. However last 5 or so MOTs on all my old school stuff he hasn't even done an emissions test

I have the same issues, fortunately my tester is more understanding.

I'll be trying cat cleaner next year which will hopefully be better, another option is to really thrash it before the test to get the cat really hot. This is assuming you have cat issues.

What exhaust do you have fitted?

Ok thanks, the car is totally standard but looking at your results mine is completely out then!

Any recommendations around the Bristol area?

Cats are knackered. 0.67 co at correct lambda is what my sports cat used to do before it got warm. Get the codes read just in case. Where in Bristol are you?

Good god no! Take vaseline with you if you do

Plenty of Avants have been broken recently try Spink or Andygplym or try putting a wanted ad up.

Whatever you do, don't go to the dealer.
You can get a pair of 200 cell high flow cats and you will pass with flying colors.

I'm sure the Bristol gang can take good care of you

Prj, if I can't get any used ones, do you know where I can buy high flow / sports cats from if they are cheaper than the dealer ?
