Ideas and advice on Audi 80 b2 1.8 8v sports

    Hi all,

after a good look around for a suitable car for myself recently, toying with the ideas of a car simular to this one.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2712096631...84.m1423.l2648

im just wondering if there is anything to really look out for on them, any do's and dont's and possible mods that would be good for it IE cams, carbs etc! if i were to go through with it i already know what direction styling wise it would be going but all the other information is a bit loose.

do they share the same engines with early golf Gti 8v's?

suspention wise whats the best route to get it sitting a bit closer to the concrete?

just any information that could be useful when weighing up options to see if i would want to go for a car like this.
Looking to buy my first s2!

They rust - usual places are sills, boot floor, windscreen surround, inner wings, bottom of doors, bottom corners of wings and wheel arches.

That example looks like the drivers seat bolster is well worn.

Same DZ engine as the Golf GTi although the cam is different

2.0 bottom end, head cam, exhaust manifold, usual stuff or convert to a 16V or 1.8T. Rust is your enemy and rare trim parts inside and out.

if you do end up with it, I think I may have a seat with the same trim, if so i'll give it to your dad and you can have it.

I also have a lot of the interior stuff for one of these that i'll probably be binning soon.

As mike has said, check for rust. That doesn't look too bad and they do go bloody well as there is literally no weight to one of these style cars.

clean OEM look with a mildly uprated engine would be my suggestion for it, it looks good already. Maybe a subtle lowering of 20-30mm and some of the ronal 15 inch urq style 4 stud alloys and a suitable stainless exhaust

so rust is the main killer, tunning wise maybe a cam and carbs then!
and i agree Pete, simple OE look just cleaned and finished!

well i will make sure i pop over with my dad soon and see what i can save up ready for it then! but thats great cheers!

to my knowledge it may be a DX engine. on a b id expect a hyrdrolic lifter and not solid.

the 8v is not a good lump to tune. head flow is poor and cams will do little if anything to improve. you could put 3k in the engine and still get done by a stock 1.8 16v.

id I were you I would think about exhaust for the sound and a panel filter. don't drill the airbox.

like the guys say body and trim are the issues.

Don't bother with carbs, they'll only sit over the em and boil the fuel

Tuned 2.0 8v is not quick in a straight line but will give plenty of useable torque and doesn't involve re-plumbing everything, so is a suitable first step, just don't expect any more than 150bhp for about £1.5k investment...

2.0 16v on carbs has a nice sound to it though...

forget carbs. less power, more fuel. even on a valve.

carbs requires lots of lift and overlap to make work well too. not worth it otherwise.

if you do go that way I got a set of schrick solid lifter 16v cams I could part with.

as opposed to stated above, everything above 4 pot engine reguires engine mount brackets and radiator brackets welded in the car's chassis.

Looks like a nice car, dump the additional fog lights, 16V it and enjoy

reguires engine mount brackets and radiator brackets welded in the car's chassis.# done in one hour... and you cant miss it...but 4 pot 2,2liter 16v or 20v are possible...with or without turbo...

i had a 1.9CD B2 and was one of the best cars ive had.

they drive well, well built and they feel it..... slam the door on one!!

i would personally fit an ABF engine on carbs as im a carb roar lover!!!

or bike throttle bodies on megasquirt, all done for say £500.

                        cant go wrong

Uber cool to drive, have a go of one
