    VW Jetta/Vento ignition barrel/immobilizer

if in wrong place please move.

been getting a vento ready for NCT last couple days,
customer took car back, and has arrived back today with what i suspected the usual wont crank, switched cracked scenario BTDT with my old 80 also.
further inspection the switch is fine but it will not crank using the barrel, just the switch, key has to be lifted slightly when on the crank position.

customer says he has another car to get barrel from, i dont think it will work, because of the imobilizer right?

what do i need to do ?

    thanks in advance

if its like a T4 you need to take the immobiliser ring off the old barrel and put it around the new barrell. Then you need to get a new key cut for the new barrel and get it coded to match the old immobiliser ring.... Or atleast thats what I have done on my T4 and it worked a treat.

Im not entirely sure about the coding but I know that a local key cutting place to me (Timpsons - they are a chain) could code the key for my van. Im not sure if they do all keys and chips but its worth asking a few first. Price varies. I think mine cost about £35 all in. I guess if you go to a dealer its going to cost more like £100 +

                Hi.

I am new to this site and hoping you can help me with a problem that relates to this post. I realise it is now 2 years since it was last messaged, however I am banking you guys are still members.

I have a 2000 VW T4 and need to replace my ignition barrel. Can someone please pm me or give pointers on how to remove the ignition barrel and immobiliser ring? I have searched online for instructions, looked in my workshop manual and tried to go it alone. On all 3 I have not been successful. Here looks to be my last hope.

                Can someone please help.....

The procedure should be in your workshop manual. You need to drill a precision hole in the steering wheel lock assembly so you can push down a spring clip that is holding the lock cylinder into the steering wheel lock assembly.

Here are some hints (but they are for a C4 Audi - the T4 will be similar but different)(It might be possible to do this drilling in situ):

Your manual should have a section where it shows where to drill the precision hole

Wow great information, it has been a while since I logged back on because of health reasons. Blown away by the information posted and feeling confident to go ahead and drill the housing. Thanks for your help urS4boy.
