    G40 Impending failure?

    00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
01-10 - Signal Shorted to Plus - Intermittent
    00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

Twice over the last few weeks i've had difficulty getting the car started, both times i cycled the immobilizer on/off and the car started up so i thought nothing of it.

Over the last week i am getting the above error codes almost daily now. Same scenario in that each morning i start the car and drive off, then about 30secs later the ECU light starts to flash and the above code is stored.

Question is, does this look like a failing sensor, or a dodgy bit of wiring somewhere. What have others experienced with failed G40's? I thought they just suddenly died, usually when trying to restart when warm. I'm seeing the opposite, only get this issue on cold starts first thing in the morning, but it does start.

Any thoughts? Obviously replacing the sensor would tell me more but would rather avoid the expense/effort if at all possible.

I had something similar, my g40 was intermittent short to ground and car would cut out.

As I had said before IrishS2 (Eric) posted up his issue before, there are situations where a G40 will fail and stop the engine while it is running. Some people don't believe this. They are still at the side of the motorway awaiting rescue by the RAC.

My consolidated post on the issue (includes IrishS2's info, thanks Eric):

      The Audi Enthusiast website. Forums for all Audis including A4, S4, A5, S5, A6, S6, allroad, A8, S8, TT, R8, Q5, Q7, 4000, 100, 200, v6, v8, vintage, local forums

You have the opportunity to save yourself from the RAC rescue. You need to buy a $10 Hall sensor from EFI Express and install it ASAP:

If you don't take this advice, you are in denial. It is the cam sensor failing. Don't be a victim, be proactive and change it NOW.

Very interesting, so it looks like i am on borrowed time. Awesome

Wish i had a scope to attempt a proper diagnosis out of curiosity and all that. I know i have a new sensor i bought years ago that just needs riveted on. Question is can i find the damn thing. Fingers crossed for a sunny weekend..

        Cheers,

If you are stuck I can post up a new sensor to you, like yours it will have to be attached to the bracket.

Good luck. Don't forget the cold water down the cam cover (open it a crack) if the car doesn't want to restart hot. It helps to cool the Hall sender and get you started one more last time.

Does anybody know where i can buy a new 3pin connector for the sensor?

I had planned to install a new sensor onto the bracket and solder the existing loom/plug onto it. Problem is the wiring was all corroded inside, and each wire had over 2.2k ohms resistance from end to end so it wasn't usable. The original plug is a sealed unit so i cant reuse that either.

I wouldn't be surprised if the old sensor was fine, it was probably just the corroded wiring that was causing my problems. As a temporary fix i fitted a second hand sensor which is working fine but i would like to sort out the new sensor and have it ready to go.

                      Cheers,
