    Recommend me a spray gun

I'm looking to invest in a reasonable spray gun, not for painting whole cars but for smaller parts e.g. subframes etc and shooting primer. Clearly I can't justify the investment in a pro spec gun, but can anyone recommend me something half decent that will do a job for me? Am I best going for a small gravity fed gun, as I won't need a large capacity
It will be running off a small compressor, which is 12cfm IIRC - will that run a HVLP gun comfortably and is that the best option these days?

    Any advice welcome

    Cheers

I`m no painter but is it like all tools big ones for big jobs and small for small jobs

I`ve go a FIAC that is good for full resprays but paul our fitter has a good one that is half the size and he`s given my arches and inner wings a good coat before the fun of a full dip begins

I was getting my gun ready and he pointed out that I was about to mix 1ltr when in fact 1/2 was all I needed

I bought a couple of cheap ( ÂŁ25 ) guns off Ebay and even I as an amateur could tell they were sh*t. I ended up splashing out on this

        http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DeVilbiss-...item5aef769939

The difference is huge, it sprays so nice. Pay a little more and you won't regret it

You could look at a decent gun second hand if you are looking to save a few quid. The cheap fast movers are ok for basic spraying, but if you want a good finish you will need to spend a few quid.

If your using compressor style make sure you have an oil dryer, also a decently sized AIR Compressor tank 26-33 gallons or 60 if you have access to 220V...not common in the states ;(....

I like to use 150psi, 175 psi is better. But you use low CFM rates so not a big deal there on the compressor side

I have read a lot of good things about Accuspray (3M) any experience?

I ideally I'd like to invest in something that is water based compatible as that seems to be the way things are going for the future, but again I can't justify anything too extravagant right now

i went cheap and cheerful i just learned to spray the gun if that makes sense.

i messed about with fan spread set feed high and sprayed the entire car on the same setting. its like a rattle can just work with the spray pattern.

the most important thing i bought was a pressure regulator and moisture trap again about ÂŁ15

Water based isn't here for plenty of spray shops and hobbyists. I would look to use 2K with a good mask (airfed or disposable if you don't need your lungs)

disposable is fine if your spraying no more than a couple of times a year

Or sata..Painting subframes will be ok with a 20 eur gun.Even when you are painting body panels with a 500 eur gun you do not use it for subframes etc.
When cleaning/mentaining a 500 eur gun it takes time. The 20 eur one is fine with less attention(it sprays bad also when new, spray bad also with pin scratched etc)

If Money aint a issue I will say SATA otherwise if it just subframe I would say a 20 € gun as above. But I wouldnt paint a subframe in 2k, sandblast it and hand it over to someone that can powdercoat it. More durable and nowdays you can even get powder in pearl and clearcoat. Have done this to Alloy rims, motocross rims, subframes and such. Look for people that use Polyurethan Powdercoat, that one is more flexible...
