    Bought another Audi !

My coupe is still sitting outside after my alternator pulley mishap
So I've treated myself to another daily its a 'w' reg Audi A3 1.8T
Having previously been owned by the mechanic that does all the work on my coupe I can say its a good un

Picking this up this Saturday and then I can start stripping my coupe as soon as I have acquired a garage. I will open a parts for sale thread soon.
Everything will be for sale from the coupe ie, leather, carbon, ellipsoids and RS2 mirrors !
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

Dependant on your price ill take the elipsoids. I have put off getting some as i understood they dont fit a 3b as a strsight swap. However they modernise the car.

Ellipsoids fit 3B's okay, I have them on my car. You can just plug them straight in and they'll work well enough to pass an MOT but to get them functioning correctly you need to swap a wire on the stalks around, there's a guide on here somewhere. You'll also need to replace the one piece 3B under light trim with separate B4 ones painted in the right colour.

They are pretty much a straight swap as Kit says. Physically fit the headlights and plug them in, which is easy, just go easy on the brittle plastic mounts.

Remove the steering wheel, remove the stalks/column trim, pull off the plug, swap the pins and refit. Should take less than an hour. If you have dash bulbs out, easy time to pull the clocks and fit new ones.

i did it a few weeks ago, i dont know how yours will have worked if it wasnt done.
Anyway here is a pic of the multiplug off the back of the light stalk.
You need to remove the yellow wire at the top (position 7) and put it where the green arrow is (position 8).
If you start to prise the 2 parts of the plug apart is should just pop out, dont seperate them fully or all the wires will come out causing big problems if you dont know where they all were.

Good news. It sounds like an excuse to buy one of those wiring pin removal tools.

Sorry to hear the coupe is dead Chris, A3 should keep you going for a bit though.

For those who haven't seen it, Chris has lots of nice bits on the car, so in sure the vultures will descend when he breaks it. Just a shame those Azevs don't fit an S2...

It's not dead Rusty ! (well not yet anyway !)
It's still being fixed (only plastics and another alternator) just in case someone might want a good V6
Just can't be arsed spending any more money on her so in order to get back at least something I'm going to break (looking for a garage to rent for 3months if you know of one ?)

              Did you say vultures
I think I've sold the mirrors 10 times already !
Need to start saving my messages though so it's a first come first served basis to be fair.

Got problems with the A3 already
Starts, runs and idles just fine. Gentle use of the accelerator all is fine, I get boost and away I go ! However putting my foot down briskly see's kangeroing (boost gauge shows boost dropping off ) and at motorway speeds even backfiring !
It doesn't happen all the time but obviously its most annoying when the boost comes in, front end rises them I lose boost and the suspension then pitches forward
                Any ideas ? It's an R reg 1.8T
Some kind of adjustable boost thingy is fitted also.

Youkl need to pull fault codes. Split vac pipes by dipstick common. Suction control on pcv split common ad is dv. Pretty simple engine to work on and most faults are common.

I'd start by pulling the codes, ditching the 'adjustable boost thingy' and putting whatever pipe work interfered with to fit it back to standard.

Yes I think I need to start with the codes so I'll see who has vagcom in Bristol.

                        Some engine shots

On the plus side its my first turboed Audi !
On the negative side I think I have my first boost leak
@kitt, the previous owner tells me the car did the same without the adj boost thingy only it was less noticeable (less boost ?)

What I know about these things would fit on the back of a stamp so any help/advise will be greatly appreciated

Sounds like they adjustable boost controller was fitted to force the car to boost, I would return it to stock, find the fault and get it running properly.

Vag com would be a good start, along with a boost leak test.

W reg? Did he retro fit the throttle cable?

I can see a couple of issues straight away. The DV and air filter look wrong.
As Andy says, Get rid of that adjustable boost thingy, get it back to stock, then do some diagnostics.

I had the same trouble with a friend of mine with Cupra R. A right bodger owned it before, and was trying to force it to boost, because the engine clearly want to be in limp mode.

That diverter vents to atmosphere. A 1.8t will not like that. Also that cone filter will do nowt for performance given the ambient heat under the bonnet.
