    Could this cause...

    ... My smoking issue?

I have been doing a few odds and s0ds on the car today, and found one of the 3 nuts that bolt the 'accodrion' looking solid pipes that goes to the down pipe almost off at the top end where it bolts to the DV. I have nipped it up.

Could this be causing my smoking issue when I put my foot back on the peddle after I have been going along without having my foot on the accelerator

My thoughts behind this is that it will be sucking in air to the exhaust system and then as I put my foot back down it blows it out with any nastiness in the exhaust system causing the cloud of smoke... I doubt I'm this lucky by thought I would ask.

    Cheers
    Chris

No I don't think that would cause anything apart from a dirty engine bay if it was leaking.

That metal "accordion" tube is the wastegate dump tube and it is connected to the wastegate NOT the diverter valve (DV). Two entirely different things.

Make sure that it is oriented correctly. There is a flow direction arrow on it:

Thanks Dave. I always get those two mixed up for some reason... So what is the reason behind it being a directional item?

Based on VAG's diagram Fig. 4 below, there would seem to be some type of Venturi effect at the discharge end where it narrows down (area goes down, velocity has to go up). I presume the higher velocity is like a jet cutting into the bulk of the down pipe flow, preventing any back flow (MAYBE).

I had it the Pcv system apart and cleaned it all up. Replaced the valve on it and cleaned the flame trap by leaving it in a tub of petrol over night, but have since got a new one to fit. May well do that as that's why I brought a new flame trap. Lets see if that helps.

Just coming in on this so sorry if anything covered. Sounds like unburnt fuel have you checked all the spark plugs to see if they all the same colour?
