    Central locking advice

    Hi guys

I'm trying to do a few odd jobs around the car and the central locking is one of them. It's been bugging me for years so I figure whilst I'm not using the car often I may as well take a look.... And then move on to the next job and so on lol. (I have quite a few to sort out ATM )

Basically my avant will lock and unlock the whole car from the passenger door and the boot. If I however try to unlock or lock the whole car from the drivers door it wont. It only works the drivers door from the drivers door lock.

I have read many threads on here and have heard about a sensor in the handle? It can break? I also know I need to check the wiring loom in the hinge area too.

Basically does anyone have any tips or hints I can try? I get about 45 mins a day to look at this after work so I don't think it's going to be a quick resolution so any help would be greatly received.

There are microswitches in the door, near the lock cylinder. They are probably fine. You are more likely to have a broken wire (or wires) in the bundle that goes from the chassis to the door. Peel back the rubber boot and look for breaks.

Mine started doing exactly the same recently from the drivers door also. Works perfect from the passenger side (thank god or filling up would be fun)

It is one of those things that I have been living with but the remote locking works off the drivers side, so it's becoming a pain. I put it down to some problem with wiring in the drivers door as it is the one that has opened and closed the most over its life. Annoying but i'm no perfectionist, so think I will live with it until the passenger side goes and I cannot get to the filler cap ha ha ha.

Based on pdf B85 at S2Central.net under 1993 ABY S2 avant, the wire colours in question are brown with a white stripe and brown with a yellow stripe. (I presume that for RHD, it is still F2 for the driver's door switch).

Thanks Dave. Tomorrow I will look at those two wires first and pray that is where my issue is.... makes it a quicker issue to deal with.

Cottis, if I figure it out I will post back so you have an idea. I have had it like this since I brought the car 4 years ago and it drives me insane so now I'm going to fix it.

Is this where the wires for the central locking go to in the door? The pump?

I have peeled back the rubber boot in the hinge and no broken wires

I also checked the wire colours and there is a yellow and brown wire and a brown and white one but both of those go to the drivers side window switch. What's my next steps guys? I'm not really to sure as I'm not great on electrics lol.

Try to check the wires between the vacuum pump and the door connector. I reck on that you car had a alarm installed at a point

I thought that was the pump in the door. This must be the servo then. Where's the vacuum pump? (Does each door have its own?) I know the main one is in the boot by the rear wash bottle isn't it?

My car doesn't have the door lock switches like yours does on the handle. I definitely mean the window switches that sit in the 'arm' on the door, where the grab handle is. Has the front, back, child window lick and the wing mirror controls...

So does the servo I pictured need checking and if so how? Or can someone direct me to where the vacuum pump for the door is please as I can't see anything else in the door where wires would run to.

There is only one pump. The blue devices (items 4, 5, 6 and 7) are vacuum solenoids (that push/pull as needed).

                          Thia diagram might help:

AFAIK, the small cars did not have this. The servos act as the switch and you push the stem on the top of the door to lock from the inside. Unlocking from the inside is done by pulling the handle. From the outside, I forget if the pass door has a switch on the lock cylinder.
