So my next port of call is to get the multi meter out and start tryng to see if there is power running through the wires to the door? If so, am I putting the tester probes onto the wires that go to the vacuum solenoid in the drivers door?

Check voltage between red/blue and brown wires. Must be battery voltage (~12v with engine off). Green/blue wire goes to CL main pump in boot. Yo can test it by finding other end at CL pump connector, extend it with piece of wire so you can reach both ends with multimeter probes and check for short-circuit (most multimeters has option to check short circuits - it beeps when there's short between probes).Comment

Hey guys, I have been doing some checks tonight.... How do I get the central locking pump out easily? I have located it in the rear corner. Does it just pull out or what?Comment

Ok, so I think I can now update and close this thread off.
I spent all of yesterday working on the S2 and now my back is killing me lol. On the plus side I have found and fixed the issue with the central locking. Some nice person who had the car prior to me (over 4 years ago) had decided to disconnect the alarm without doing the job properly. Upon all my investigations I found that none of the original wires in the car were broken, everything had power like it should however where the greenwith blue wire went into a little Clifford alarm box (found yesterday under carpet) the wires had been cut to disconnect the alarm and they had not rejoined the two wires to reconnect the signal wire from the drivers door. So this has all now been removed along with all wires that led to the bonnet alarm switch and right down into the boot so all evidence of this aftermarket alarm has now been removed. Whoever guessed it was a past alarm that was causing the issue was correct!
I also managed to figure out why half of my windows dont work.... Anyone got any old but working electric window switches going spare????
