Need a bit of advice, looking at buying a car but the owner hasn't got the V5,he says he's got a V62 form. I only want it to scrap it. Do I need the V5 (I will need it when I take the shell to scrappy?) if its not im my name surely I cant get any fines (tax, speeding etc)
Is it worth the risk?
Kinda depends on what sort of money your talking about and what sort of person the seller is, I've purchased a few car's with no V5 or any other paper work for that matter without issue but we're only talking about a few hundred quid. At the end of the day a V5 is no way proof of ownership so as long as you get a receipt for the sale and are confident you have the sellers genuine address etc I wouldn't worry too much.
That said if the seller is in anyway dodgy or cagey I'd be very cautious about purchasing something nicked with keys, ask for paper work regarding repairs etc in the sellers name, basically anything that proves they do own the vehicle.
Even if everything seems legit you can still be caught out. About five ago I looked over a Toyota Land Cruiser for a friend after finding no faults with the vehicle we went through all the paper work and everything seemed perfectly legit. The owner had only had it six months but had a very genuine sounding reason for selling, he had all the paper work one would expect including a V5 in his name and at the address he was obviously living at. Turned out to have been stolen with both it's sets of keys and service history etc about a year earlier from a recently disused farm where there was an ongoing probate issue so no one had noticed it go missing. My mate had a nasty shock a year or so down the line when the police contacted him to say that wanted to check the thing out, however he was very lucky and got to keep it, can't remember the exact circumstances now though.

we are only talking about hundreds not thousands of pounds The bloke on the phone seems ok but anyone can put up a front.
How do I go about scrapping it tho if I never get the V5? Can I just take it to a scrappy?
I think its worth the risk
Hmm that could be a problem now, I've not weighed a whole car in since they tighten up the rules (for the better) last year. I'd have a poke around on the DVLA's website and google in general to find an answer.

Our scrappy won't have without a v5 or current/past MOT
I sent one with a destruction notice an they turned it away
Took it to a metal dealer who gave £50 then squashed it up and took it same (EMR) yard that had sent me away
I'm not buying any without v5 or current MOT anymore as too much hassle
This is what put me off the cheap red s2 on eBay recently
