What's the differences apart from the ABY has a 6 speed box and the 3B has a 5?
I like the thought of having 6 gears, but both cars top out the same speed so I'm assuming the 3B has larger gear ratios?
What one's worth getting if you've got the money?
ABY has coil packs whereas 3B has the distributor.
ABY has 230 hp and 350NM of torque vs 220 hp and 309NM in the 3B.
ABY box can handle more power and torque than the 5 speed 3B item.
ABY has ellipsoids vs standard reflectors in the 3B.
ABY intercooler is larger than the 3B.
3B is lighter than the ABY (Apparently)
There are also many subtle differences between the two. But personally i prefer the ABY models.
Most ABY's have slightly wider 6 spoke (avus) wheels and 3B have 5 spoke wheels (the 6 spoke will accomodate porsche brakes which is worth knowing)
The leather trim changed from a large panel design to a "pleated" (narrow horizontal panels) design (the quattro cloth was unchanged)
The battery in an ABY is under the back seat which improves weight distribution and allows more space in the engine bay
Less Steering turns lock to lock on the ABY, but is also slighty lighter in feel.
You can activate and deactivate the ABS on the 3B via button on the dash, but not on the ABY.
Shock diameter is larger on the ABY
Clear front indicators and red rear indicators
There are many subtle design changes throughout including bolt sizes etc but all academic really.
It is worth adding that not all the differences in S2's are 3B - ABY
E.g. Some early ABY's had 5 spoke wheels, non ellipsoid headlights, orange indicators, old style leather seats.
Likewise late ABY's had airbag steering wheels...

IMO, there are 2 really worthy ABY issues against 3B: 01E and the body (extra reinforcement panels). The other advantages are implementable with less efforts if needed.
I'm guessing going for ABY is a better shout then?
if you take advice from a few people who've owned both the results would be a lot closer. some of the most knowledgeable people on the forum choose a 3b over an ABY.
pick the best car available on it's individual merits.
3b is more of a drivers car. ABY more of a detailers car.
3B has stronger rods and you don't realy Need the coil Packs if you are Not going to Push it Hard.
The best Route is a 3B with the 6 gear tranny from the RS4
