Check that the gearbox has been serviced, and the cambelt has been done. IIRC it cost me around £700 just for the parts to do it all.
Check for any knocks or clonks on the suspension, and make sure all the gadgets work.
To give you an idea on economy, I had the older 32v S8, and I typically got ~21mpg average driving around on open roads, 28mpg on a trip, even 30mpg was possible. I couldn't tell you about town driving, as I don't do any of that. I would imagine the 40 valver would be better on fuel. I found it similar to the S2 on fuel.
The main problem I found with an S8, was keeping the speed down. You cannot really hear how fast you are going, if that makes sense, coupled with the linear power delivery, and the fact that it handled so well, that corners can be taken with ease. So it's easy to end up going way faster than you think you are, which could get you into trouble with the local law enforcement.
They are amazing cars though. I really miss mine, and would have another, if I had room to park one, and if I lived in Germany.
