    which breakdown cover?

    Evening chaps,

without wanting to tempt fate i would like to think the S2 is very reliable and very rarely breaks down hence why you wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on breakdown cover.

I have been looking into it tonight and if you check the T's and C's you will notice a lot of people will only recover you to the nearest garage even though you select national cover.

If my car broke down miles away from home I would just want it recovered home.

Who do you all use, and can you get cover for less than £50 ??

Been with Rac for 7 years.costs approx £80 per year and have used it several times one of which recovered me home nearly 300 miles, superb service.

Recently cost a mate over £400 to be taken less than 200 miles as he broke down with no cover so its money well spent

        Hello Andy
Agree with the other posts, I have been with the RAC for over 20 years. Used them on numerous ocassions, always take you to your home, if you sign up for that cover. Tip: Shop around for best RAC deal, they discount and you don't have to accept their first "top" offer. Regards Ian

I've got AA AND Green Flag !
Green Flag is a free option I get with my bank account. however this only gave me recovery up to a maximum of 10 miles ! (as I found out recently when I broke down 10 miles out from Birmingham but 70 from home )
I now also have AA which was the only recovery you can pay by instalments which took a measly £7 over the net to book instant cover. In both cases I have every option BUT home start.

AA will not move my car twice for the same reported fault, i.e. recovery to home then delivered to my mechanics. For local stuff I use Green Flag as my mechanic is 7 miles away

All in all used them quite a bit this year
Twice the AA, but one of these was to get the mrs car back after her clutch cable went. And at least 3 times green Flag with getting the coupe up and down to the mechanics
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

Ive used Britannia Rescue for years and as long as you are 1/4 mile from your house they will recover you to a garage of your choosing and cover rail fare home if needs be.

Over the years they have recovered me about 3 times the 200 mile trip to my dads garage www.churchroadgarage.com to get it repaired without issues. The last time they did try and offer me some money towards a repair locally but it wasnt going to touch the sides with an engine rebuild.

RAC £80 a year covers me in any vehicle to be picked up towed onto destination or back home, home start and covers me on my bike too, used it three times in last couple of years with no hassle. Although last time I called with a puncture on the bike they said 3 hours wait time Got the mechanic from work to come out instead half hour away

My work colleague isn't in today. His car broke down at the roadside at 6:40am so he called the AA who said someone will be with him within the hour. When HE called them to chase at 8am he was told that the guy who was due to get to him had called in sick.

So no recommendations from me, but it's shocking practice to guarantee a customer that someone who hasn't even arrived at work will be with them soon!

Just gone with RAC this year £90 for me and the misses in any vehicle anywhere in the uk. Did read about one that cost £40 where if you breakdown you pay the fee and then claim the cost back.

AA are as useful as a chocolate teapot (unless you are an alcoholic) They also want to charge more for a 10yr+ old vehicle when most callouts are flat batteries, flat tyres and wrong fuel (none of which are anything to do with vehicle age) This can be got round but I would deffo look at RAC or Green Flag over the AA.

They were even useless in Geneva on continental cover a few years back. Thieves basically.

Charging more for a 10+ year old car only applies if it's vehicle based cover, not personal which will cover you whatever you're in.
Green flag don't have a patrol force, they just use garages so might not be as willing to fix at the roadside, rather get it back to their garage and charge to fix it?
RAC....their staff aren't too happy at the moment!!

Be wary of cheap 'breakdown' cover offered through your insurance company. I had cover for my T4 Transporter through my insurance (2gether insurance) - I broke down on the A93 at the start of this year, called up the breakdown number, it then took them 3 DAYS to get a recovery truck out. By which time I'd had to spend a night in a hotel then make my own way home (Broke down Friday recovered Monday). I also had to drive back up to the van (about 100 miles) to give the recovery driver the keys.. only to be told it would only be taken to the nearest garage! £120 cash payment later I finally get my van home.. Needless to say I'm now with the RAC but haven't had to use them yet.
