If it lasts more than 20% of the time the original did then you're laughing...

G4 Crank Position and G28 Engine Speed Sensor info

The thing is, has Cymru1's G28 really failed? They always throw a failure code when the VCDS or VAG-Com systems (or blink lights) are queried with the engine off. The flywheel isn't going around so the G28 has nothing to respond to = "FAILURE". If fact it is typically just fine. I can't say that I've heard of one acutally and truly failing.

More G28 Engine speed sensor (and G4 crank position sensor) info here:

        Good question...
Had a bit hassle over the last couple weeks with non starting so swapped the fuel pump and hey presto worked fine...until yesterday! No starting issue returned - knowing that the pump is "good" it had to be lack of voltage.

A bit of investigation on the forum told me that the G28 switches / initialises power to the fuel relay so had a look at it. Lack of proper testing equipment and frustration saw me hit it with a screwdriver.

        Fired up.

        Again this morning the same.

May just be doggy connection or something but it looking as I've finally found my fault.

What's inside these things anyway to go wrong?

Wires and a magnet and not much more. Sounds like you have a broken wire inside there somewhere. If/when you do replace the G28, could you do an autopsy with photos so we can document the failure for future reference? (Please )

You are right about the G28 being involved with the fuel pump (via the fuel pump relay). The ECU looks at the G28 during cranking and WILL NOT energize the fuel pump relay until at least 13 RPM has been achieved (documentation said 23 or 26 RPM but Paul N. found the number to be 13 RPM). As a result, a low battery that is only capable of spinning the motor on the starter at 12 RPM or less = a non-start. So battery health is important to starting these engines (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU).

Update: replaced it with a cheap one as mentioned in 1st post of the thread. £10.
Took a risk and no idea how long / reliable it will be but got to try these things!

Perfect start, idles smoother than I've ever known it. Happy

Old had a thick layer of metal swarf all over it (perhaps would of been fine with a clean but I guess 19 yrs of cranking takes its toll?)

So just in case this cheapo one gives up in a month I left the old one in place as a backup.

Just for confirmation I will swap them back over just to see what happens next weekend.
If it turns out to be a failed unit I shall perform "the autopsy" as requested.

From my G4 and G28 post linked above ( and here: http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/20986.phtml ):

"These G4 and G28 sensors can fail but it is not common. More likely to be the cam position sensor or fuel pump problems before these if you have a starting/running issue. You can change them yourself (easier than the knock sensors to get at). That said, they are magnetics and there have been cases of the sensors picking up metallic debris that causes them to malfunction. Therefore, you *might* want to remove and clean them if you are having strange starting or running issues. Here is an example of an engine speed sensor that had accumulated metal debris (the tip is magnetic):
