Old school Audi TT buying advice

I'm thinking of getting a convertible 225bhp '51 plate TT to fill the gap between the A6 2.6 V6 getting scrapped and getting the S6 back on the road.

The one I'm going to look at is a private sale and has got about 80k miles on it. Could someone give me the low-down on what to look out for on these cars? Are they generally solid?

    Cheers,
    Tom

Evo seem to have quite a good write up. http://www.evo.co.uk/buying/buyinggu...ing_guide.html TT owners club will no doubt have loads of info on these, but I havent owned one myself.

I am sure they are built fairly well but I would take it for a drive and floor it to see what you think. I have only been in two (both 225bhp models) and they both felt alot slower than I was expecting. Cheap fun car for winter though I guess. Ten a penny car for hairdressers or is that unfair? Take a couple for a spin before seriously considering this purchase would be my advice.

From what I remember it is important that they have had regular oil changes with the correct oil.

Oil strainer in the sump has a tendency to get clogged, so regular oil changes are super important. At 80k I think I would want to get this checked. I previously owned a TT and we I have also had an a4 quattro 1.8t. The turbo on these kicks in early, but lacks power at the top end in my opinion.

My wife went through a phase of wanting a ragtop TT a few years ago, I was also surprised with the performance of the 225 as well, as all the ones we tried seemed to lack the bit of kick, but not everyone is after the performance I suppose, and all were nearing 100k miles.
She would have been happy with just a 150 ,but I suggested a Quattro. I did notice a trend on a few of them where the oil light came on if driven hard though the gears . Not sure if it was just oil surge, but they do suffer from blocked up pipe up oil strainers I have heard. Just underpins what dufflecoat has said really, and make sure the oil has been changed frequently using the correct grade.

It may have a similar horsepower level compared to the S2 but it lacks torque and that's what makes it (feel) slower than what people on here expect I guess?

225 can crack manifolds check for blowing.
the lower rear arms can snap when the olive ball joints jam. ( rare)
as already mentioned the oil pick ups can get clogged with carbonised oil.
The engine can suffer with oil breathers rotting.
My wife had a 225 and it is quick ish if its neck was wringed however it pulled well low down too.
Check the instrument cluster as these go wrong lots the main fault being erratic fuel gauges.
The only other thing that went on the wifes was the yaw sensor. it decided the car was in a slide and tried to correct it several times very very scary....

Buy a spare urS6 as your spare / stop gap car.

                  Cheaper than a TT.
