S2 costs - About time after 2yrs hassle free

I've had the S2 nearly 2 years now and if I am being honest, have been surprised by how little I have had to do work wise and how reliable it has been. I have had one MAF connection hiccup (contact cleaner and gave it a wiggle) replaced a leaky header tank and then just serviced it every 3k miles with high quality plugs and oil etc.

Other than vast quantities of fuel, it hasn't cost me a penny but I did spend a great deal of time looking for a very well sorted and comprehensively restored vehicle. That time, effort and money paid off I think.

There is nothing remotely wrong with the car but some preventative maintenance needs doing and some basic wear and tear items need replacing that just happen to add up to a lot of money.

I have just had the Cambelt, water pump, rollers and Aux belts done. The aux belt was in poor shape and was rubbing something. This is now all fixed and fine for a few years/miles.

The aux rad is in really poor shape and I thought about removing it and blanking off pipes but found an OEM AKG Aux Rad on the bay of thieves for less than £180 new, so treated myself. That will be fitted shortly.

In the process of deciding what colour Roose boost hoses to update the the current setup with. I can see a couple of old Samco hoses in there at present and pretty sure the I/C hose is original Audi, so that needs to go. In the last few months, I think there is a tiny leak somewhere as the I think the turbo sounds like it is working slightly harder than it should with a slightly tinnier noise if that make sense. New hoses and clips will freshen everything up and make me feel happier long term.

Front brake discs and pads need replacing. I currently have the 322x32 Movit disc/caliper upgrade on and they perform beyond anything else I have ever used/driven. The cost is nearly prohibitive but the performance is like nothing else and due to the fast use the car gets (not a daily, just a fast toy) I want to avoid trees and ditches. With the help of some of you guys, discovered that Porsche 993 OEM Cast drilled rotors are half the cost of the same items Movit (or the UK franchise) would sell me. These will be purchased shortly and installed in time for Spring when the car comes out to play.

£225 just spent on road tax, ouch, I resent tax as much as paying for haircuts and toilet roll.

Then just need a coupla new tyres and it should be good to go.

Toying with the idea of more power but I think with the current RS2+ setup it balances nicely with usable power that beats pretty much anything in the real world whilst keeping reliability and costs down. If I meet a GT3 driver who isn't a complete pussy, I might change my mind.

So, roll on Spring, no salt on the roads and some sticky tarmac is what I am looking forward. Cannot say the same about the current bills but fun isn't cheap right?

Thanks for ongoing help and advice from various members. So easy even for mechanical idiots like me to find out quality info from tried and tested brains.

Thats what I love about this s2forum, and is continually improving on how these cars can be maintained and a more reasonable cost

I have to say that S2's if looked after wont cost a fortune. The past couple of years of ownership mine has cost me very little (although it did get a mechanical strip down and overhaul prior to that).
I'm loath to upgrade to something newer than my ABY coupe simply because of the potential bills that newer S/RS cars can bring you! Brakes cost a fortune V8's can get Timing chain issues 000's bill, V6TT's can have camshaft issues 000's bill.
Anything ont he engine can be replaced for relatively small money, and new pads and discs all round dont cost a fortune (even with the porsche front brakes)
Even tyres are relatively cheap in comparison to more modern sizes.
I do have a naughty hankering after an avant (sign of age) and have thought about many RS4's and S4's. But tbh, if i had to have more space i would be tempted by a sorted modified S2 avant or Rs2. Simply because i know its unlikely to give me a massive headache in the future!!

      Just my 2p..

Well I have had my Avant for 5 years and its only in the last 18 months it has sucked me dry and not in a good way. Prior to this I only serviced it and did the usual break pads, discs and tyres and top mounts. And all of this as my daily car too !

In the last 18 months im not going to lie, it has cost me a fortune and given me massive issues but its getting back there again. Thing is, its been well looked after but an older c ar is always going to have issues flare up and then quieten down. Im just glad its not something newer as I would never have been able to afford all the repairs.

New fuel lines throughout, both rads, head rebuild, full new breather system, power steering hoses, coil conversion and soon to be a back end rebuild with new diff seals. Thing is, this amount of work has prolonged the life of the car and put me in a position whereby if i did ever need to sell it, I could still get half decent money as its still being cared for. And im sure the next purchase would only need a whole load of work anyway so its better to stick with a well cared for older car than buy a newer one and wait a shorter time for things to start to fall off or go wrong.

How many older cars like ours can people jump in and do a 300 mile journey without having worries about break downs and still be as comfortable at cruising speeds liek we have? Not many I can tell you.

Couldn't agree more. I have full faith in this car despite its huge power output and what it can do in the blink of an eye. I always thought it would be more highly strung than it actually is.

An RS2 would be the only thing I would consider swapping it for. My head has been turned recently but then there is a chance of getting a dog and then regretting selling what is a solid car. If it aint broke.......

It would be easy to sell it and not deal with issues as they arise but I kinda feel like the car deserves it after the fun and enjoyment it gives me. Almost like we all have a duty to keep as many decent examples going as possible.

I'm more the other way round, enjoying the car but still have had and will be having loads of work done to it in my first two years of ownership! But only because I love the car and want it to be the best it can be, very solid car!

Good to know it isn`t all bad news. I bet you wouldn`t see that on many car forums with older cars.

Certainly if you think these are expensive to run then get an RS6, you'll soon be begging for the cheap thrill the S2/RS2 gives

Having been looking at a replacement family car (RS6 has to go - not the RS2) I've realised that I need something pretty top spec to compete... it's kinda nuts when you're sticking loads of options on a car to bring it up to the same standard as your 10-20 year old Audi

I've spent a good chunk of the RS2 with the engine rebuild but I remind myself that I'd certainly get a fair bit more back of the car than I paid for it now, and you can't say that about many cars. So if it needs a few grand every few years it's still a hell of a lot less than something new, considering it's not depreciating!

Totally agree when you consider how much you lose on new cars just on depreciation alone. They still require running maint like the older cars and certain parts can be more costly. They also lack character (and power)

I agree with your coments and will share my ownership expirience!
Bought my ABY Avant with almost 50.000Km 12 years ago from Audi, in this 12 years I´ve done another 170.000Km so it´s now a little over 220.000Km it´s on LPG for 45.000Km now. In all these years I´ve kept it with official AFSH, apart from a homefry it´s stock and apart from consumables and maitenance by the schedule (15.000Km intervals oil changes and 90.000Km timing belt and water pump) I´ve only changed the clutch because the gearbox came out to fix a minor oil leak, it´s a family car and it´s used everyday for everything, it´s not perfect outside but it´s excelent inside and very good everywhere else, it´s fast, plenty fast! and economical (from the LPG), the quality of everything in this car is superb, it was made to last if well cared and it shows passing every year inspection with a clean bill of health, it´s secure and confortable in 16 inch wheels and 205 tires (cheap to buy compared with the rubber strips more modern cars use) and it sticks like glue to the road, mine it´s full extras with cruise and eletric black leather recaros that still feel and look like new( I treat the seats with a good cream every other year) my wife drives it every day to take the kids to school (this goes to show how good the avant is!HEhe!)and it keeps going strong, there it´s nothing out there that can replace it without costing a lot and depreciate a lot so when I add everything this is the best car I´ve ever had, no doubt the most round proposition, I´ve even thought about buying another or a aan to save and replace this one when it reaches 500.000KM!
                    I love it!

I guess the most sad thing about these cars is what they themselves will do when the owners die and there is nobody left to look after them ha ha.
