    Fools

This won't come as a surprise to most but anyway, I thought I'd have a moan.

Against my advice, my Mum took her TT to a local well known tyre place (with the blue, white and yellow sign) for an MOT. She's been having a complete nightmare of late with my Grandparents and just wanted to get the car sorted - anything for an easy life. Anything but more like

The car failed on snapped rear springs; a common problem for TTs and the headlights needed adjustment. Fair enough, it's 11 years old, so that's pretty good.

So, at this point, she phoned me up in a bit of a state. Firstly, they told her that she couldn't drive the car because it was illegal to do so. A bit of a grey area but obviously one which they turned to their advantage and which they used to panic her in to making an immediate decision.

She asked me about the springs, to which I suggested that she should source the correct springs from Audi and get them fitted, as it's a truly mint example and has never had anything but Audi parts in her ownership. So, she went away and then phoned me back up to say that she was told that they could not fit genuine Audi parts. Alarm bell no.1. They cannot fit THE PARTS THE CAR HAD FROM THE FACTORY. Really :corey:

When she spoke to Audi, they informed her that there were several different springs and that the correct springs must be ordered, based on the paint codes. I tried to explain that it was unlikely that aftermarket springs took this in to account but she was told the usual thing about aftermarket parts being the same and the words 'Audi approved' were used. Now I thought this only applied to parts with 4 rings on them Alarm bell no.2.

Anyway, she was reassured that they would fit the correct springs and because she just wanted an easy life, she left the car there. I told her explicitly not to but she ignored my sound advice, demanding why and ignoring my brief and accurate reasoning.

So, they fitted some springs, charging the same for the aftermarket springs as the genuine Audi items (!) and around £100 in labour. I could do that job on the drive in less than 2 hours with plenty of tea, so on a ramp, it's well under an hour's job; so they charged pretty much Audi levels of labour too.

When she picked up the car, she was again told some tall story about the Cat needing a special treatment, and was charged an extortionate £20 for some cleaning gunk. The way she relayed the story, she wasn't really given a choice in buying the gunk, as it was already on the invoice when she got there.

So, her cheap MOT turned out to be a bit of a pain but anyway, she took the car away with a year's ticket on and one of the weak spots of the TT addressed for a few years at least.

If the above had resulted in a serviceable car then it's just something to chalk up to experience and never take your business back there again but as it happens, she phoned me up again in a bit of a state, as she'd been out to look at the car and surprise surprise, the rear was sat up high like an off-roader. Great.

So, a bit of research indicates that she has a facelift car and facelift cars came with 20mm lower springs So it would seem that the wrong springs were in fact not fitted...

When she picked up the car, she took it to a trusted local place to have the tracking set and it was way off and could not be adjuuted to the correct range. The car is OE and has covered 52k with no accidents etc, so it's not like it should be out of spec. The high springs won't help but here's the rub; she was charged £30 extra to have the tracking set by the garage that fitted the springs... I asked if there was a readout but again, and unsurprisingly, there wasn't. An easy £30 then.

So, she's now left with a car that looks ridiculous, has the incorrect parts, incorrect rear tracking setup and she was charged through the nose for what she has received.

With all the stress in her life at the moment, she is afraid of taking the car back to them, as she doesn't feel that they will take her complaint seriously and that her word will just be dismissed. I've explained that she needs to lodge a complaint to take it any further but that's up to her. I feel very sorry for her and have really had to bite my tongue to avoid the inevitable "I told you so" argument.

It's sad that garages still see a lady in a smart car as an easy way to make money but they do.

    That's 5hit.
Maybe you could explain all to said garage and at least give them the chance to rectify their ****up.
She'd probably done 100's of miles on the broken springs and not aware of a problem, can't see any harm in her driving it away.
I can see why you're biting your tongue!!
    Good luck.

Yeah, I've told her she has to let the garage know. The springs are more than likely an honest mistake that anyone working on a crossover car can make; it's the rest of the story that annoys me...

I assume she paid by credit/debit card, if so take it up with the bank. They'll more than likely get some, or all of the money back

          Im Appalled!!

Sorry to hear that bud. Its a difficult position to be in when someone is desperate and gets stiffed over by a cowboy sheltering under the brand name of a large "trusted" company. Even more so when you've offered them advice and it wasn't taken...

I know youve done all you can to help so far. But if it was me i would go and see this garage personally, with a very dissappointed face on and tall them they've completely conned your mother, dont make a scene but make yourself obviously not happy in the office and it will likely make anyone in the waiting room very anxious...
Explain that you are and engineer working in the automotive trade and that you know your shizzle and that fitting those OBVIOUSLY incorrect springs is more dangerous than the correct but cracked springs that they claimed was dangerous, the suspension geometry will be way out, and the spring rates of the incorrect springs will not be right which could with current weather conditions cause the cars handling to become unpredictable...
A suitable compromise i would say is that you make them refund the cost of the springs (they can have them back for all you care) and you personally supply the correct springs and get them to fit and re-track the car (with printout) free of charge!!

Usual story. I'm flat out at work and having to travel up and back to Chester for wedding stuff...

You just know that they've looked at the car after it's been done and the back is jacked up in the air and they've thought, it's just a woman, she'll not know the difference...

I'll be able to fit some proper springs for her and sort out whatever needs to be done for the tracking in the near future.

She needs to raise a complaint with the garage and if they fail, then head office.

If they had just fitted the correct Audi springs in the first place, then we wouldn't have this issue.

                Hello Rusty,
So sorry to read of your Mothers problems and the service she has received with her TT.
I do not know how these individuals sleep at night. How would they feel if it were one of their nearest and dearest getting ripped off...
I could cite so many similar examples, but just to lower your blood pressure...My wifes Jazz needed 2 front tyres soonest. A " similar sounding brand " managed to source 2 correct ones and fit within 2 hours. Whilst the car was up on the ramp, the "fitter" ( I cannot use a more complimentary expression ) advised me that the front pads needed changing. I thanked him and explained that they were already in a list of jobs to be done by my MOT garage ( who I trust absolutely ) later that month. MOT garage 'phoned to say it had passed, but that the front wheel bolts were stretched so badly they needed a 4 ft breaker bar to get the wheels off.
In my S2, I had a classic with its new steering rack , where it was (MOT) failed because the steering could not be turned from outside the vehicle with the engine running ( By a well respected Audi specialist ). Nothing in the ( huge ) MOT manuals about that ! My expert simply adjusted the rack pre-tensioner and guaranteed all was well ( this was 11 years ago ), and it has been.
Sadly your Mrs may be getting the same **** from Social Services as my Mrs; with very elderly parents; no support, no parking restrictions lifted for professional visitors, no retrospective aid with costs for stairlift ( so Mum could wash !) and wanting 10% of the estimate costs simply for endorsing their own approved tradesmen ! Sorry, rant over. James.

I would suggest that you give the garage a call and say that you're calling on behalf of your mother. Explain to them that they have fitted the wrong parts and that she will either require a full refund or the correct parts fitted at no extra cost. Say that she will put this in writing to them (you write the email for her) so everyone is completely clear about the situation. Make sure you copy their customer service address on the email. They will then have to deal with it.

                  Tom

Be very official curt and to the point.Let them know you mean buisiness.Give them a deadline of when you want a response a first step of acknowledgement by them. That gives you ammo now because when they fail to do the "simples" ie deal with your complaint threaten them with small court action. If they treat it seriously form the off and get a manager to speak with you and he offers to take the car back in and order the correct audi springs and fit then fine.If you get pushed from pillar to post and messed around Threaten to sue and tell them your going to the papers. They might listen then!!

I popped over to my Mum's work to look at the car. Front rideheight 650mm, rear 680mm

Based on my help, she phoned them to inform them of the issue and they've been good about it and have asked to see the car, which is good.

When I was looking over the car, I found a part number on the springs took a picture. Some research later and it turns out that they are Sachs springs, so I concede that they are a good brand. Oddly, Sachs only list a Boge spring on the ZF webcat... Anyway, ECP sell the Sachs springs, so this is most likely the source of them but only list one type for non-sports suspension, which, based on the rifeheight issues, I'd suggest she has been supplied.

The springs are £37 each on ECP's website. She got charged £82 each Sounds about right.

ECP also sell TRW, which is an OE Porsche supplier, so good enough for my Mum's TT They list 2 types of spring on their webcat and the lower, sports ones are available from ECP. Hopefully, the garage will swap out the springs and refund the difference in parts costs.

Fingers crossed. At least the issue has been identified, now they need to rectify the issue.

Harsh for your mum. Kwik Fit is good for emergency tyres if you happen to get a puncture outside one of their outlets and that is pretty much the limit of requiring their "help"

Sounds like you don't need any ammunition. What they have done is beyond idiotic and in no way shows they have a clue about what they are doing. I would be telling them (not asking them) that they will be sorting this out today as a priority or else trading standards are involved and a wee letter to the local press. I mean really, it would be on a par with a surgeon replacing a knee joint with a sodding elbow joint. Douchebags!

Hope you get it sorted and your mum can feel better about her experience.

I remember a mate (a bloke) who went to Kwik Fit for a couple of tyres. Was advised to get whatever (ie, what the computer said was on the shelf) When he came back, he paid for them and got in his car and drove off. When he got home, he found out they had fitted some economy crud to his car but charged him for Pirellis. Ha ha ha, he went back pretty quick and went bats**t mental at them. In fairness they sorted it immediately but probably only to avoid death by tyre lever. Matey boy was very very upset ha
