stay away from new BMW 2.0 d engines!!!

The new N47 engine from bmw is POS...
Friend of mine bought one 316d. had the car from new and...at 72000km...the camshaft driving chain snapped.
Is normal to snap iff is smaller than my bike chain lol....
for this you need to remove the engine, head, sump and then the timing chains cover.
    well done BMW!!!
    Pictures tell 100000 words!!!
Is interesting that iff you go at BMW they will tell that the chain needs to be changed when the driver hears the chain noise LOL....not everibody is mechanic....
soo you buy an new BMW and at aprox 60k km you need to spend 3k euro for timing chain...excelent...
No waranty from BMW offcourse and at the models till 2009 march you have to change the crankshaft too!!!

lets dont forget that the intake manifold can fail in those engines too and guide to similar result of this as some parts of it goes inside the cylinders

That was at the m47 engines..the old one at wich the butterflys in the intake fly through the engine and destroy the turbo too on the way out...but the timing chain was better and in front of the engine not at the rear like this one....
I changed the entire timing chains, guides pulleys, head complete, 1 piston, piston rings, rod, gaskets, injector nozzle and the glow plug.
        The engine runs fine now....lol....

That's why I'm going for the new 3l diesel

I did read a bit about this, although it will be under warranty, my reason for replacement of the RS6 is needing the mrs car on the road reliably so hopefully they put a thicker chain on that one!

Its same on the 1series 4 pot petrol engines aswell, the bmw specialist down the road does loads of these chains and make £££s on every one.BMW charge well over double for same job

This is why I sold my e60 530d when the turbo went because of a £30 crankcase breather filter that was poorly designed (newer one modded) but not a service item!? I fitted the turbo and got shot of it, great engine but not for me thanks.

Let's not forget the 2.0tdi vag engine which destroys its oil pump or the Porsche water cooled engines that explode due to many reasons (google it and laugh)

Well, that was fixed in 2005, and it's a pretty known issue - you should replace them to the newer cyclone style ones. I guess it helps to follow forums.

That's my 530xd (you did not get the xd in the UK ). DPF off and tune, lots of fun as daily car, especially in the snow!

There's one of these in my factory that is for sale, a fellow director owns it and wants it sold since he accrued 9 points on his license whilst driving it. I'm pretty sure he's up for offers, it's just gathering dust. Off the top of my head, its done about 60k miles, is about 3 years old & is white. Car is located in Wrexham...
