Slide them forward a notch or two.
Remove the bolt on the front of the center slider that stops them sliding back, 5 or 6mm allen key and a 8 or 10mm nylock nut from memory.
Remove the plastic side rail trims, pop a pin up, and they just pull of iirc.
Slide the seats all the way back and off the rails, the sliders are greased, try not to get it in the carpet.

I think I normally have the backs upright and they can be pivoted out the front or rear doors on their side.

The bolt/nut that stops it sliding back is No 12, vagcat says m6

        In which case

        Remove bolt
Sit in seat, plant feet firmly, pull lever and shove seat backwards until it slides off the rails
        Drag seat out of car

        What have you found anyway?

Can you grab the rear ashtray for me that sits between the two seats if it is in good nick and not open and closing by itself. Mine is doing my head in.

Assume you are looking at an Avant but assume the ashtray is the same. Good luck with the seat loving Andy's revised method for scrap yard removal. Made me chuckle.

The later seats use a little wedge shaped spring clip instead of a bolt on the centre rail, makes removal even easier
