Bit of a guess but the temporary import rule of 1 year for non US citizens is one rule and importing a car long term is another. Surely after one year of "temporary" import, it would be deemed more than 25yrs old and hence ripe for full importation status. Or would you have to export it back to the UK and send it back again ha ha. What an annoyance.

I think it's kind of hiliarius, that you can't import these cars, before they turn 25 years, because of some stupid rule about emissions and safety, when you think about what kind of bad quality most of the car's build in the US have.
        Kind regards

That would be an expensive annoyance, lol!
I'd like to think that at the very worst it could be technically deported and held int he port without going on a ship as a mere paperwork exercise and then imported back into the USA with the correct permanent import paperwork? But most of the time these rules defy all logic!

Think of it like a visa. My wife came her on a student visa, we got married andshe stayed legally, they didnt make her leave the country, get a fiance visa and come back.

I figure it would be the same for cars. Worst case scenario, you have to drive it to canada or mexico with your paperwork.

Whatever you do, make sure it's in tip top shape and load the boot with spares. They only imported 1700 CQs into the US, and finding a good shop that knows these cars are few and far between.

I think registering it over in CA might be the safest bet after the 1st year rule expires. Should be straight forward to bring back to the States when the 25th year date kicks in.

Depending on time frame Id be willing to share a 40footer
                Cheers mis amigos,

I think registering in California would be a major mistake. Nazifornia is well known for its idiotic, bureaucratic rules and regulation. Register it in a car friendly state like Florida, where nobody cares about it, like no smog check, or inspection

Did you look any further into this with regards to the 1 year temporary import overlapping with the 'coming of age'?
