    Head gasket.

Hi , my car has been tucked away for the last 3yrs with a leaking head gasket (leakng into water side not oil) and it overheats, i have decided to get it sorted.I have replaced all the sensors with new but its still overheating, now would the leaky gasket cause the overheating problem.?
I have invested in all new parts to fix head gasket including new head bolts seal's ect, now here's the problem do any body know of a good person / workshop in Norwich Norfolk area that would do the head gasket for me, baring in mind that its an S2 (Avant) and most people you speak to say oooh is it an A2 sportline !!!! strait away you want to put the phone down caus they obviously don't know. Any help would be very much appriciated as i would like to get her back up and running for the summer its been too long now and as of all garages things are starting to stack up around her.

you will need the head pressure testing and skimming. make sure its the metal gasket and get new headbolts.

best not to kill it, just fix the issue

Yep, a leaky headgasket will cause overheating issues. If you can strip the head off the car, send it to JP on here to be skimmed etc as he is top notch and the only person I would trust to do a proper job on it. You hear some horror stories of so called specialists ruining them but JP has always been totally great! if you need someone else to get it off then I cant help but once its off... again, send it to JP. That is the only thing I would say. Oh also get youself some new exhaust manifold studs and copper nuts to make the refit much easier.

Also hope you got the victor reinz headgasket set....

Yes to all of the above apart form studs and nuts (good point chris).
        Where is JP based.?
Ideal senario would be to take the car and leave it till its done.

I don't think he has a workshop facility to leave the car unfortunately and I don't think he does that stuff, just the machining and head rebuilding. He is based in Hertfordshire I think. Google JNL racing and that's him

By over heating do you mean pushing water out of the header tank. Or just showing on the temperature gauge. How sure are you that its the head gasket, and not something else. I had a faulty TPS that made the turbo glow red hot. There are other possibility's,
Thermostat, fuel problems, faulty pump etc. In saying that, if its pushing it out of the header tank it will most likely be head gasket. A leak from the cylinders into the waterway will pressurize the system. If it is a head gasket failure, then you will struggle to find a garage anywhere in this neck of the woods that has any knowledge of, or has even heard of an s2. If you find someone to do it they will want an arm and a leg. Btdt

I had the same issue with mine and most garages advised it was the headgasket, a low mileage engine was sourced and replaced but the problem continued - In the end it was just the radiator that was blocked and now all sorted

there are certain things that can be done to try to eliminate other things first. an engine seems drastic to me.

the usual symptom of the gasket is pressurising of water hoses. do they go rock hard after a bit of boost and coolant pisses out of header tank. - head gasket.

If you just leave to idle do you get what appears to be a standard working water system ie it flows round thermo opens, hot bottom hose. if so then that indicates normal operation of the water system.

the difference between these cars and the 16v is a bit of labour charges for turbo removal etc. it takes a little ,longer. also torque settings for bottom pulley in particular abnd high in comparison to most cars. having said this its still only really a basic engine from a belt prospective

I just changed the engine as it was an easier option than trying to find someone local to do the headgasket and I did find find one person his labour charge was more than what I paid for the engine.

I had the usual symptoms as stated above RE: the usual symptom of the gasket is pressurising of water hoses. do they go rock hard after a bit of boost and coolant pisses out of header tank. - head gasket. and mine was the radiator.

I would do a flow test on the radiator first before biting the bullet for headgasket IMHO

Can some explain to me why a head gasket on an Audi I5 is so difficult?

Unbolt bits of metal, puts a new gasket in and bolt it up, skim if needs be. Is this any different to any other engine about?

I had a test done from header tank and that had cabon monoxide in the water or whatever it is but the fella had a positive reading, i fitted a new rad before it started overheating.
When you get the engine warm and give it a bit of beans and then let off water then rises out of the header.
This is a nice part of the world to live but if you need any "specialist" work done then forget it.
Thanks for all comments and suggestions so far,

Give ANY engine with a water pump a bit of beans, and water will rush into the header tank afterwards, this is NOT indicative of a head gasket gone.
