I wish I could use the S2 more but it spends more time getting work done to it than anything else, something always seems to crop up

Hoping that everything will be back to normal very soon and I can enjoy driving it again

Used to get about 22-25mpg with a homefried stock setup. Now with RS2 setup I am at 15mpg no matter what

I found it was cheaper to keep an 80 tdi to use daily and keep the s2 for weekends\fun than it was to just use the S2 all the time.

Insurance on the 80 was £25 per month, tax worked out about £18. That money was saved very quickly with the price difference of fuel.

In the end I found myself with the S2 trying to pick the most economical route home to avoid traffic, but them wondering if I was driving further and was I actually using more fuel . I used to constantly watch the mpg on the dash.

I suppose if the price of fuel is an issue, keep the S2 as a toy, if it's not then work away and have fun

I am selling my mk5 gti golf to have an avant S2. My daily will be a mk4 golf R32 which is coming out of the garage to make way for the S2 . But then I am lucky I only do 4 miles to work. So I will be swapping them around and using both. Can't wait. Long live the S2.

          And quite rightly so! Enjoy!

If money wasn't an issue I'd use the S6 as a daily, but with a young family I cant justify the expense.

          For those who can, it's a no-brainer.

So they seem to do a bit worse than the S4, but the S4 would proberly do that if i used the turbos abit more on normal driving.

This is me. Driving my 2.6 isn't really economical around the city, but it is such a nice car. Getting around 20mpg around the city and 35mpg on a London to Leeds drive (110km/h).

So I want to see how the S4 compares to the A100, it is 6 speed after all. Would consumption on S4 be same-ish as on S2, or higher due to the weight difference and tyres are wider too I guess?

If fuel cost is an issue (it is for me), why not consider LPG conversion, I am definitely doing one my S4. Price for litre of LPG can be up to 50% cheaper than petrol. Of course, it is not needed if car isn't used as a daily, but as mine is, don't see why not

ran S2 for 6 years as daily driver, (kept outside in moist climate ), mpg could vary from 4-33 (rs2 type spec)

I've owned my S2 for 6 years and it was driven daily until a year ago when I started catching public transport to work and It's still 'my' only car (wife's car is the family car).

In city traffic and putting my foot down if there's an opportunity used about 13.5l/100k (21 UK mpg according to some online calculators). That's Homefried but economy wasn't much different stock.

Reliability has been reasonably good. Only got stranded and had to get towed once when my clutch master cylinder pin snapped. Otherwise have had other things fail where I could still drive home - POS units, voltage regulator, MAF, N75 valve, it currently has a leaky heater core which is bypassed and a boost leak somewhere.

Aside from fuel, running costs (not counting mods and upgrades) have not been too bad I think. As a comparison to a 'normal' car the wife's 2006 320i has had some much bigger $$ repairs with a failed valvetronic stepper motor and sensor which was big $$$.

I once did some sums to see if it would be worth getting a second more economical daily car but with the 10-15,000km I was doing per year it would have cost more to buy a second (cheap) car.

Given that fuel is an unavoidable cost, the economic of it would depend on how far you drive, cost of fuel, and cost of alternative / second car.

Pro's and cons to both ideas of it being a daily or keeping it as a toy. My opinion is that cars like to be used and will perform better over time with use. That said, I don't use mine for work as the journey is too short and it would only just be warmed up, if it were 15miles, I would use it half the time I reckon. As it is, I most likely save more on fuel by not using it, thus allowing me to run a dag dag which is much nicer (lazy) to drive, park and generally not give a sh*t about. It can also happily have crud in to go to the tip, is covered in grass and crud from the golf course and my shooting/fishing trips. I find the S2 very unrewarding to use as a vehicle to get from A to B.

The downside of having the S2 as a 2nd car is that when you drive it, you drive it like you stole it. I get around 14-16mpg with a very heavy right foot. I literally drive it on boost everywhere that allows. I live in the country, so that is everywhere. Boost, brake, corner, boost again everywhere ha ha. That is why I bought it. If you have one car though, it would be fine. Bit heavy on fuel (low 20's I reckon) heavyish clutch, crap seats, poor turning circle. I do around 4000mile a year in mine and probably use more fuel in those miles than I do in 18k in the dag dag ha ha. That is how it should be though right?

Lets be honest tho, fuel is going to be a problem unless you're well loaded. In traffic, around town I was getting under 20 mpg. You do get used to it and it doesnt seem that bad, but when I went back to a dag dag as a daily I was able to take the family on holiday for the first time in 3 years!

Could do but I'm not too fussed. They are ok when you are hanging on for dear life and the adrenalin is pumping. It is longer journeys just cruising when I find them a little weird. Would rather spend the money on Super and more power

Yeah the seats are pretty crap, the latter pleated type are tolerable and the Recaro option better again.

I consistently get between 350 and 400 miles out of a (£85+) tank of fuel, that's just driving normally but it's worth noting that I only use my S2 for longer runs on weekends etc. In granddad mode I can squeeze 450+ out of a tank on a motorway run, however I can also use on up in less than 250 miles without too much bother.
