Gearbox SOS Car Down.

Sorry its not S2 related but my 2005 A4 2.5tdi with 6 speed manual gearbox has now died. Got a call from the missus saying there was fluid leaking from the car, turned out to be gearbox oil leaking all over the road. After removing undercovers discovered hole in gearbox no external damage at all and car drove 100% with no issues, has done 103000 miles. What the hell has happened?

Yeah drives fine but can't as its lost all its oil. Measured a piece of the broken casing, its only 4mm thick!

it may be a bearing or or similar broken.. so you need a new ( used) one.. se the mark for ratio/year by the 2 upper bolts in bellhousing... fx CBL 12345 stamped in...

thanks, gearbox code is HSL same as some of the v6 tdi Passats. Usually if a bearing is going bad it will whine but gearbox was totally quite and worked 100%.:

An update. Removed the box and stripped out the diff to find the dowel pin had sheered which caused the shaft to move and distroy the casing so much for Audi quality!
