    car valuation

Unfortunately I am having thoughts about selling my URS4. Since I bought it it's been a black hole where all my money goes, and I am slowly getting to the point where I don't think I can handle any more expenses. Usually I don't have problem with it, but I haven't enjoyed the car much since I bought it, mostly just been under it fixing it up.

Timing belt has been done at 170k it's at 181k atm. Front suspension is all good, rear needs top suspension mount done. All shocks are solid, brakes won't bother anyone for quite some time either (new pads and discs all round). Has 7" boleros with new Hankok tyres at the front, and some budget at the back. Has black leather interior in pretty good state, but passenger seat has ripped bolster.

I am just running out of puff. What do you guys think about all this?

Boost is fine. MAF sensor died just now. And it's been non-stop problems. I don't want to sell it, but I need to be realistic.

Unfortunately the older they get the more money you have to put in to keep it going and looking pristine! Sometimes I wonder to as last year I only spent £350 on my older A4 during 2014 and my newer A4 only cost £160 and then the S2 cost £4250 which is RS maintain money!!! and bloody crazy! Keep your big red beauty in the end they are worth it!

I understand that. But at this point I am in minuses because of that car. I am thinking of getting a TDI runaround for a year or 2, and then look for a good solid example rather than beaten up one. Car deserves to be restored, and I simply can't do it. Never thought it'll take this much work.

Yep understand where your coming from!! Do you have a list of what needs doing? I might be selling my A4 1.9TDI Quattro sport not sure though!! But a cheap TDI is sensible and put some serious dough to one side but on the flip side it always give you satisfaction building something up that's been neglected? But like you say that doesn't come cheap!

I think your doing the right thing. At your stage in life as a young man at university you don't want to be saddled with a hang mans noose forever always not being able to afford the repairs. You should be enjoying life something i wish i told myself at your age.But to me the car was everything.Wrong!! Friends and relationships are more important Janis. A car can wait until you can really afford it. Thats my honest opinion mate.

That's something I'm looking at now, A4 TDI Avant.

There is leak from sump gasket and plug, MAF just died (most likely will change before selling). Rear suspension mount is knocking and one of the control arms needs changing, so that needs attention. Exhaust isn't great, been repaired before by last owner. Valve seals are a bit leaky so get a puff of blue smoke in the morning.

Good bits are: all 4 shocks are solid, so are discs and pads all round. Front top mounts just changed, new fuel lines. Engine pulls well in general can't complain.

Never said it's cheap, but i've been fixing it more than driving it.

I like my cars and I am a patient man, but can't do it anymore. Just had a look at mobile.de and you can get some nice example S4/6 Avant for quite a good price and low mileage.

                    If you are on a budget I would get a B4 80 1.9tdi over an A4 1.9tdi.

Much simpler and cheaper to fix, easier to work on as well.

(I have had both at the same time). A4 is much nicer to drive, but cost up replacing the multi arm suspension setup v wishbone bushes on a strut I had more stuff fail on a "good" a4 than on a beater 80.

Been looking at 80 as well, if I good one comes up and I'm ready to buy, i am all over it. But me selling S4 isn't 100% yet, need to approx. know what I could realistically ask for it. Paid £2000 last March.

I have wanted to tell you that for ages but couldn't as i thought it would fall on deaf ears. As you said buy a TDI and as you say it's possible to get a very nice S4/S6. I wouldn't worry about miles as long as owner has lots of nice expensive bills to show he has rebuilt suspension.maf, you name it. Good luck whatever you do Janis.

From now on I don't trust any bloody paperwork of "work done". Loads of work been done to mine too (which was one of the reasons I bought it) and it's all falling apart. Thanks for an opinion anyways.

I would go along with that.We own the A4 and an 80 and although the A4 is nice although, not as well built, the 80 is much simpler to work on the suspension.A4 multilink works extremely well and does last but when it needs doing you might as well do the whole front and that ridiculously expensive compared to the 80.

Don't think I'll be driving it for more than a year, year and a half. I like that A4 you can get a decent extras whereas on 80 there is nothing. But 80 would be cheaper and simpler to work on. There is a nice 80 Avant on ebay at £750.
