I know a few of you here have experience with the T4 Transporters. I'm viewing one at the weekend. It's a 2002 2.5 TDI so I wondered whether anyone could give me some quick buying tips and things to check/look out for? Many thanks!!

T4 transporter buying advice?

The usual really.
Timing belts are important.
Oil leaks around bottom pulley, usually oil pump to block gasket. Time consuming job to fix.
Oil leak from oil filter housing, quick easy fix.
Look for judder in the clutch pedal, dual mass fly wheel.
Try to peal the copex back on the engine bay wiring loom. It runs across the engine from left to right and the insulation gets rubbed of the cables.
Can cause all sorts of faults if water then gets in. Several hours and several rolls of heat shrink and loom tape sorted mine.
Rust in the bottom channel for the sliding door.
Central locking electrics on sliding door relies on a striker pin that can be temperamental. £50 part to fix it.
I make it sound bad but there pretty hardy really mines about to hit 250K runs great.
Hope it goes well

Thanks for the help! I don't have vagcom unfortunately. I have a cheap VAG code scanner but I don't suppose that'll show if the timing's out will it? Where is the OBD socket on these?'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.Comment

Pretty much as said above and check for rusty arches too but mainly it's the electrics above the engine in the bay. That's the main issue. Also if it's not pulling right don't buy it as they cost a fortune to trace the issue and can take months to do so. I sold mine after almost £2k and 18 months of trying to solve the limp mode issue and replaced it with a 1.9td. So much simpler however the 2.5 tdi's are so much better and I do want another!
Oh and glow plugs are a bug ger to replace too lol. Check it doesn't leek into the cab from the aerial bung is the scuttle and if it has ripped/ missing seals on the sliding and boot doors then these can be costly to replace.
Check for service history really too. A well looked after one will last. An old dog won't.Comment

Socket is under the steering column and you can tell if it's not running right and it won't pull and will feel flat as tooComment
-
That will do to pull codes. You will know if timing is off idle will fluctuate and cold start usually takes a while etc.Comment
-
If you find someome who knows what they are doing mechanically then they are straight forward.. The 1.9 td is awful to drive. The 2.5 May be more complex but it's all worth it.Comment

get Dmitri to remap then glow plugs are no longer required

Buy a 2.5 petrol and have few engine problems instead of the diesel!
Check sills arches all panels and underneath for rust.
Mine rusted like it had sat in the sea(that's why I've sold it!)
I had a 2 l petrol-slow to start but would do 80-90 mph all day up the motorway
Check whatever you buy will do hot starts-temp senders don't seem to last too well(GSF stuff anyway)
Check insurance will cover it if it's a converted van with seats-some companies are arsey over seat conversions without safety certificates-even my genuine caravelle had the insurance moaning and wanting photos to prove it was an 8 seater-they think 9 sweaters are under cover taxis!
Go for the best bodywork you can, once they've started to rot you ll be forever chasing it with a mig.
Prices high due to scene tax too.
Look for alternatives (not merc Vito tho-they re worse)Comment
