    Which Diff?

    Hi guys

I have a mate building a road legal but totally track ready Mk1 Golf. He has a 1.8t engine out of an S3 and a gearbox out of a B5 S4 to go in and is thinking about diffs now. he is making the thing a quattro.... yes, 4 wheel drive without the rubbish haldex system.

Question time: Which diff should he go for? He asked me to find out which is stronger etc. He is thinking an S2 one or an S4 one. Which is stronger? Which codes should he look for? Finally if anyone has the one he needs going spare then please let me know and I can pass it on to him.

Thanks in advance for any help etc.

    Chris

needs 4.11 final drive. i use the Coupe Quattro / S2 rear diff in my 1.8T CQ.

the S2/CQ one is a locking rear diff where the S4 one is not (that i know of).

and i have done much the same over here in one of my project cars, but with a 4.2L 40v into a Corrado with an 01E trans and all CQ running gear. B3/CQ style suspension and rear diff.

The UrS4s have a locking rear diff.

I would think the issue would be the length of the torque tube/nose piece on the front of the rear diff should be part of the decision for this installation.

ah yeah. but he was saying B5 S4 trans and which diff the S2 or S4. i took that to mean the diff from the B5.

guys over here break those a lot and then go to like a Skyline R32/33 type of rear end. same ratio, stronger, locker type or plate diff allowable as well i think.
