    car dolly

Hi guys. Can I tow a car which doesn't have MOT/TAX, but is insured using a dolly? Can't seem to find a definate answer, but dolly is classed as a trailer according to gov.uk

    A-frames and dollies
If you attach an A-frame to a car in order to tow it with a larger vehicle, the car plus A-frame counts as a trailer.

If you use a dolly to tow a broken-down vehicle, the dolly counts as a trailer.

In both cases the usual safety regulations for trailers apply.

Read more in the ‘A’ frames and dollies’ factsheet.

Car needs to have brakes operated by the dolly as over 850kg
You need to have had licence before 1996 or need a trailer test
    Not sure about mot etc
Dolly is usually for recovery only not transport
Have a look on VOSA website for details

From what I was told is the driving wheels have to be off the floor.

Pretty sure if any wheel is in contact with the road the vehicle needs to be taxed and insured.

A frames don't have wheels off floor.
I've towed scrap cars with them all 4 on the floor.
A frame had a brake system too

i was politely informed off a traffic cop that a-frames are to be used in an emergency only, same as a rope. however my A-frame is not braked..

Thanks guys, I guess I'll just have to leave her in Leeds over Easter, as I am not paying £230 to get her to London.

May not suit, but car trailer hire is pretty cheap, if it can be hired at the start and left back to a depot near your destinatiion.

If it is a C4 you're moving, you need a decent tow car. i.e one that is not too light, and remember that you need to stay below 50mph or less to avoid jack knifing. Look at you tube foe examples to remind yourself what you're avoiding when you think you are going too slow.
