    VW Transporter Van thoughts

Any one have one that they use as a tow car?

What are they like with a car and trailer on the back?

    MPG?
    Clutch killer?
    Powerless?

Toying with the idea of having a more universal daily or its going to have to be another 4x4. Or a daily and a cheap sprinter van or something.

Currently using a Nissan navara, its chipped on the motorway you can quite easily over take and pull past stuff. Whilst getting 25mpg

    Thanks

Not towed with a t4 although owned one.
Bare in mind weight of trailer and car.
Moving off a muddy field? Or just Tarmac?
More room for spares in a van than a 4x4
    What's wrong with a Navara?
I've only towed heavy stuff with a Disco td5, never any issues

Navara is okay, would be nice to have the room in the back of a van for fuel tyres and fuel. Never been to a race track that I have had to park on wet grass so really don't need 4x4.

I've had vans for the last 20yrs, and had most on the market, imo the merc vito is the best van on the road. Long service intervals, no cam belt, lots of room, will carry 5 and spares/ fuel /tyres etc. The last vito I had, had 180,000 on the clock, regular serviced, I replaced discs and pads, and a clutch. It got thrashed every day....

my 102 2.5tdi t4 pulled a trailer and my coupe up and down the country with no issues at all.
210k on the clock and still pulls like a train.

                    I used my 104 T5 1.9 to regularly pull 2.5 tonnes,no issues at all

Can well recommend a mk2 Vito aswell, that was a low bhp model also

Just dont get a 1.9td T4... gutless and will not pull the trailer and car like you want.

Tbh yes, a little along the bottom of the doors, but mechanically never let me down.

Another vote here for the later Vito. They finally built them properly and galvanized them after around 2006 so they don't rust like they used to. They're RWD which should be helpful for towing and makes the longitudinally mounted engine a lot easier to work on than the transverse offerings. Also means that they have a great turning circle should you need it. I had a 111cdi compact and it was quick, reliable and drove more like a car than any other van I've tried. They can be a bit flimsy inside (seat wear, cr@p window switches, my window regulator broke) but mechanically mine was excellent. Same can be said for my 313cdi sprinter with 480k miles on it! A friend of mine has a T5 and I do like it, it's a lovely van but it's not been without it's issues including needing a new turbo after only 60k miles. I couldn't personally justify the extra ££££ for a VW badge!

You may want to ask a certain member on here who is the manager for the local Merc dealer commercial workshop. He tells me that they hardly ever see Vitos in there.
'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.

I have a towed another T4 (on a trailer) with my T4 for several hundred miles without issue. Mine is 2.5tdi 4x4, I get about 32mpg which reduced to about 20mpg when towing. It was a heavy camper van towing another heavy camper + trailer though... The fwd ones give better mpg of course.
