    Engine Management Light On

Moderators- Am I allowed to ask about this problem on here, as it's on the Wife's 207cc? I'm sure I'll get a rap on the knuckles if I should'nt.........

Meanwhile, it's an 08 plate with the Mini engine (1600 petrol, N/A Man Box).
The display says 'Depollution System Faulty' and when I pulled the codes it came up with P0011 (from memory)
It starts and runs (although down on power) and is still doing 50 miles a day. Using about a litre every 2k miles (not smoking tho).

    Any ideas??

Cheers PRJ, but it's chain driven.
I agree that it's still possible for a chain to slip a tooth, but surely the chain/gears would have to be so slack/worn for this to happen that the rattle from the chain would be horrendous (and it's not!!)

Someone told me that if the chain was badly worn, then the first obvious sign would be a single loud slap of the chain on the aluminium housing during initial start-up from cold each morning (before oil pressure starts working on the tensioner(s) ), and it's not doing that either.

What has confused me more than anything is that the Fault Code and the dashboard display seem to contradict each other, and because of the dashboard message- I had considered the possibility of the Lambda sensor....

Maybe it's time to get the specialist to have a look

I have just done one of these that developed this fault after an oil change. Its the PRINCE enigine.
Remove the 10mm bolt holding the VVT/VANOS in place. As you remove it from the head you will see a fine gauze on the oil gallery. Clean this out and then clear the code restart and all will hopefully be well.
The one I did recently was a 40k 08 medel that came in will erratic idle and needing a service and brakes sorting. The rough idle was a leaking CTS (common I found out) I did the service and noticed what I class as excessive cam waer given the miles.
Apparently BMW binned the longlife 20 k services and reduced to 10k for this very problem.
After starting the car I took it for a 10 mile spring and all was well. Customner collected next day and it ran rough as anything and depollution light on and the same fault code. I cleaned the VVT gauze which was sludged up and it ran sweet again...

PS Depollution fault is standard peugeot blurb and doesnt necessarily relate to a mixture/lambda fault.

Also you can try swapping the cam position sensors from bank a to bank b and vice versa as they are the same part number and see if the code jumps. However I am confident the filter in the VVT will be restricted. The VVT on right side of head and takes 5 mins to remove clean and replace. It may need a sharp pull to free the O ring seal from the head.

                  Thanks, Monkeymagic
I'll most certainly have a look at that! (Would have done it today, but the Mrs has conned me to take her to Cardiff Bay Shopping for the afternoon, so it's gonna have to wait 'til tomorrow)

I think the units you refer to are at No 1 cyl end, at the very top of the cam housing, sideways into the housing?? One on each cam?

As you look at the engine its on the left at the top. Effectively oil pressurised plunger that adjust chain tension. Do a google image search on your fault code and youll see the part. It is a 5 minute job that can make all the difference. Apparently BMW fitted the gauze to the later ones as the early type was failing so regular.

Just spent an 90mins taking the solenoids?? out from cam housing above cyl 1.
They both had about a 40mm section that enters the cam housing, with a few O rings and in the centre of both (along their length) is a radial gauze filter. They were both spotless, and there was no other gauze inside cam housing.
Thinking that maybe I was barking up the wrong tree; I also removed the large cylindrical motor above and behind cyl 4 (about 60mm diameter, and similar in length) which has a coarse thread on the end of the shaft.
An absolute b**ch of a job to get back in (Ign on, pulse the multi-plug on/off, and eventually it pulled itself back in), and it then took forever to start.

Anyway, the upshot is- the bl**dy light went off, and back on again

                      Any ideas, anyone
