    Attention Painters,need advice!

My question is folks,do we know what paint system Audi/Vag used back in the day,ie from the 80's up to the mid nineties on B4 80 91-95 and C4 A6 91-97.

I am soon to be getting the S6 saloon whole front end done. After speaking to a local sprayer he likes using Water based paint for all lease car work as he says it's an easy enough system to apply. He went on to say that if his VW work van needed paint he would use 2K (2 pack) for a better job as 2 pack with hardener is a tougher paint and resists stone chips much better. I am trying to use the same stuff Audi used.

    To recap,

1.What paint system did Audi apply in the factory on B4 80 cars 91-95 and C4 A6 cars 91-97?, was it the old style 2k isocyanate paint.

2.What manufacturer of paint ie GLASURIT,ICI.PPG,SIKKENS did Audi use?

    Your thoughts appreciated Chaps!

I used solvent base coat when I've just done my recent car up.....water based paint in the 18 years of using it doesn't stand up to my standards. I've had issues with GLasurit for some years now with the refinish starting to dull and texturise... For years they have said things like film thicknesses, booth temperatures, water trap in basecoat untill I'm now showing them bentlys which are painted in water based at factory which are also doing the same thing so I'm telling them it's a problem with their product. So,if your doing your car use Glasurit bascoat and a top of the range laquer in GLasurit or DuPont

Thanks Irish,I still have lots of literature from my spraying days including Glasurite and was well aware only the best firms used to use it back in the 80's.I am hoping to see your Avant at ADI.

Thanks Kulster, i now remember you personally painted your stunning refurb/repaint of your S2 Avant, just awesome

I want my car to be as well done as yours and as part of that it's vital i feel i use the exact same stuff you used.

Just so you can understand whats what here is a run down of what i am providing the painter.

Another C4 bonnet, mine has slight crash damage to lower edge,it's minor but will never be right so not good enough for me.My spare bonnet has a very slight depression in the bonnet from most probably a football and the bonnet is getting a colour change to include underneath.

The wings are very good and solid just need a good flat back and priming ready for base and top coat.

The bumper needs quite a bit of prepping to make perfect. Here's the car below.

Could you give me the "line" of Glasurite solvent base coat you used? and what top of range lacquer did you use?.

I am sure the painters system is PPG so his tinting pigments will be incompatible with Glasurite. I guess i will have to get some one to mix me up enough solvent basecoat in Glasurit for the job in hand, using the Audi paint code. I have been out of this painting lark for years now and have lost all access to our works paintbooth, which is a shame. I was barely out of my teens when i started painting for a hobby/career change that the recsssion of 1990 put paid to.

As i am painting the front only, for now, i need your professional advice here. I assume i need to get the guy who mixes the paint code to keep on file or give to me the exact tints used with the weight in gramms of each pigment so i can get an exact mix made up based on the "mix" so it matches up when i get the rest of the car done. I realise that's a pain in the bum but i have had a melange lifestyle colour (gold) LY1T pearl paint on my 80 Cabriolet matched to perfection as the guys who did some paint rectification kept it all on file. It should be alright shouldn't it?? Your help will make me a very happy man!!

I'd get all the possible shades of that colour mixed up and sprayed out onto test cards first.... And then once laquered and dry you will then see which shade has the best colour flips head on and side tone to it. Once chosen the best colour just have 5 litres of solvent base mixed up not ready for use so you have enough of the colour to do the whole car
