Buy an ssd and chuck your old hard drive. Install os on new ssd and use a set aside drive for vids, pics etc. That will end your treacle issues

Temporarily disable your current antivirus and give Malwarebytes a shot at cleaning the machine.

I'm no wiz but have experience of the dreaded treacle!!!! A migrant con man did the above for my computer charged me £75 and it was useless after 2 days. Take it to a high street store and for £50 get windows 10 installed it's free and get them to migrate all you personal docs and photos. Job done.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

                    Great start.

                    Some other suggestions:
Delete all the internet temp files
                    Defragment the drive
                    Check for malware (as suggested)

Bring up task manager and look for any programmes running which you don't recognise.

Check what is being loaded when the computer starts up. Delete anything that is non essential.

All of the above assumes your computer is less than five years old. If its older, you may like to consider hardware upgrades.

Solid State Drive. They have been out years but for some reason people are not twigging about them. I put one in my crappy PC (as in cheap box, small RAM, crappy processor, basic power supply etc) about 4yrs back. It is still running quick as you like. From pressing the ON button to being able to see a google homepage on Chrome is about 20 seconds. If I had a decent processor, memory and all that gumph, it would be more like 10seconds but as it is, it is literally like "click, bang, click bag" You will wonder how you ever coped without one. My PC at work is less than 12months old and is utter crap in comparison, despite the machine and components being significantly better than what I have at home.

SSD's are digital with no moving parts like the old hard drive you have in your machine. Old style hard drives do not store bits logically like an SSD does. An SSD is permanently organising what is saved in a way that maintains space and speed. The main benefit are the read/write speeds of the drive. Dont just consider storage. Whenever you give your machine a command, it has to either read data from what application is stored on that drive. An SSD does this in a stupidly quick manner to a HDD.

They were costly years back but you can get them for next to nothing now.

This link is to the OCZ drives. You can get cheaper ones but these are the brand I have used and whilst a bit more, they are tried and tested. If you have a mate close by who is slightly tech savvy, it is a case of taking your old drive out of your "knackered" machine, putting in the new drive and installing either your existing Operating System on to it. If you want to keep all existing files/folders etc, then that is a little more hectic but if you machine is actually working, albeit slowly, then you should be able to back all that up and then deal with it once you have done the basic OS install.

If your current machine is very old, you can buy a semi decent laptop or desktop for less than £200, bang an SSD in it and hey presto, rapid machine for the next decade. I sh*t you not.

You would be amazed how many perfectly fine computers are binned because they have become too slow. People think something is wrong with them but in theory, the existing drive is exhausted and cannot read data in an efficient way that allows the computer to function properly. Bit like people selling a car because they think it has a significant fault when all it needs is a little fettling, a couple of cheap parts and an hour or so of labour.

If you decide to give it a go, make sure you get a drive that fits the SATA ports in your machine. If it is old, it could well be SATA II or even older.

The offers of advice are odd without establishing your PC hardware specs and operating system.

Not really. Rikki (with all due respect) sounds like he knows how to use a computer but like most people, doesn't know how it works.

He has mentioned that anti virus has been disabled and a drive cleaner attempted, so whilst assumptions are the mother of most balls ups, we can assume he is on some form of Windows, likely to be 7. If not, you could do with upgrading Rikki.

By all means, offer some pearls of wisdom. The boy needs help.
