I have had a P38 and a RR Sport and I loved both the p38 had character but are pure money pits!! Parts I replaced in 2 years of ownership were air bags, air suspension valve block (bloody expensive new but plenty 2nd hand ones) air suspension pump, various bits on engine and mine was the 4.6L with lpg and had a full stainless steel exhaust you could hear the beauty coming from miles away lol!! Then the cylinder head went and then I called it a day with her. However the Sport if your budget allowed is the best 4x4 I've ever owned pure luxury and extremely good off road. Someone's mentioned a A6 I have one and that's superb so I would highly recommend one

Wouldn't bother with a P38, but these are coming down very nicely: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Range-Rove...item43e189fa43

I'd stay clear of the P38 personally. L322s are coming down to the 3 to 4k mark now, although don't expect it will need much less looking after than an S2

P38 heaters are a big fail along with others
              It put me off them
About 50p for an o ring and something like 14 hours labour to fit it!
I bought a disco instead-not as flash but does the job
Get a late td5 with (I think) the 15p engine as better head location-early heads crack partly due to plastic locating dowels like k series Rovers
              Or go Jap
Nice Land Cruiser for your budget
Don't go hilux/Surf, I think they have competitions with P38 s for breaking down
Newer Rangie L322 are just within budget but I think they have their own problems -how about an electric parking brake sir? Doesn't work when your battery is flat sir!

When they designed these they must have really brainstormed the electric parking
brake so thoroughly they actually forgot what a handbrake does!

Good luck Richard. Doesn't sound very promising. I know nothing about these pose mobiles but if i had to have one i reckon the Touareg would be nice and within your budget, just looked.

This is what really gets on my nerves about car design now. At no point have I ever pulled the handbrake up and thought "I wish that was electric". Its unnecessary, just something to go wrong

                      I completely agree!!
Before my A6, I had 2no Espace's with electric h/brake. (I hate to say it, but the Espace system is better than the A6, because it engages automatically when you turn the engine off, which the A6 doesn't). It works well until you drive someone else's car (or a hire car) with manual h/brake; switch engine off, seatbelt off, open door, foot on floor outside car to get out, remove other foot from footbrake and then realise the car is moving. (Yes- it Has happened to me, more than once, because we are just so used to having stuff done for us that we forget......)

Cars peaked around the late 90's early 2000's for me. Everything that was worth being electric was electric, proper clutch's and proper transmissions

More to the point, I have never pulled the handbrake on full stop - what's the point when it's Auto and in Park!

Besides, early TD6s have a handbrake with a lever, and cables that go to drums in the rear disks... much like an RS2 - and works just a ****!

Buy an auto Urs6 Avant, with seven seats and raise the electric driver's seat up to the top.
