    Can you use 1.8 4cylinder rods in the 5 cylinder? 7A part number is; 027198401C. ADR,AFR & AEB is:027198401B. If so Eurospec has off the shelf 150mm rods for 4cylinder 236mm block.

        Nice piece , too many $$$$ for a little extra displacement.

          Heres some more displacement for cheaper than you can build a good IL5 motor

                I'm going to go short block 86.4 crank/150mm rods/E85 10:1 comp. Turbo undecided. Tossup between gtx3582r or precision cea6266. Thanks to the S2forum brainstrust for all the input!

                  Why go with old tech turbos instead of something new like an EFR by BorgWarner?

                    I knew the choice of turbo would be contentious. Over here in Australia its Garrett first, secon, third then everybody else . I don't have any experience running BW apart from oem applications. I would be happy to use one if I can find a direct distributor in Australia. What turbo would you consider for my setup. 220mmblock/83mm bore/86.4 crank/150mm rods/E85 10:1 comp. Would like to retain 7A cams/hydro lifters but will swap to custom cams/solid lifters if we have to. Goal is 650hp atw.

                      Efr turbos are definitely the best out there in my opinion. I love my efr6758 on my daily driver with its quick spool and big torque. But availability and costs are big factors and for my URQ project I went with a billet 84mm compressor gt35r as it was the right money. I would stick with efr, Garrett or holset, in that order of preference. Just my opinion. I would also go with a stroker as they can rev as hard as the stock oil pump and hydro lifters can take. So why not stroke with an easily available tdi block and crank and take the extra 10-15% capacity. Plenty of big power stroker engines around.

                        Sh*t des, it's hard enough to make up my mind without the temptations of a stroker. I do feel confident enough to go the stroker route but at the same time want to keep things as simple as possible . 2.34 should be enough displacement.

                          Oh, and those EFR turbos are impressive. Found this interesting;

                          Juust outperformed the gtx3582r but costing an extra $1100 AUD I think I will stick with the Garrett.

                            Gota pay to play but anyhow be careful if 83mm bore. Stock head gaskets don't work so you need a custom one. Then the bores are thin too. Stay 82mm. Stock gasket and then 95.5 stroke in a tall block with 159mm rods. Will rev to 8 k and the extra cc will help spool that laggy Garrett . Partnered with a good head and 7a cams. That's my plan for my URQ anyhow.

                              Aaarggh ya sod! I guess you've twisted my arm. I always did want to do a stroker but didn't want the extra hassle. It does make sense. I'm heading to the wreckers this weekend. Vw tall blocks are pretty common over here. I will be hassling you now for BTDT moments.

                                For stroker inspiration look at jp build thread in his urs6. With a gt35 with hta 86 compressor he was well over 600 bhp on pump petrol. So add e85 and your goal looks easy enough.
